    The Loretto Chapel

    In 1850 “The Sisters of Loretto” sought to establish a Catholic girls school in Santa Fe.
    Unfortunately the architect died before the building was completed. Leaving no access to the chapel loft. The sisters prayed about it for a nine day “Novena” to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth day a mysterious carpenter appeared with only a hammer and a carpenters square. Using wood non native to the area and wooden pegs, the “Miraculous Staircase” was built. Afterward the carpenter disappeared without thanks or payment. Some believe it was St. Joseph himself. The entire structure rests only on the bottom stair.
