Just glad my Team beat those pesky fLamers.. That made my Season.

I didn't have much hope they'd get past the Avs. Pretty decent run....for a Team that has super shaky Defense, and a total 'tire fire' for netminders..

I can't really see this with the salary cap that is in place. I can't speak for the tax situation. In Pittsburgh, we have had several highly paid players and this area is not one of the more overly populated or richest - by any means. In short, we compete regardless. In comparison, the MLB does not have a salary cap and the Pittsburgh team has consistently just about the lowest team salary and winning percentage. There, I see a correlation.

I agree. I think maybe the weather (and taxes) certainly has something to do with it, but not everything. I do hear the former players say about playing in FL (for example) you will get more of your money than the same contract in other areas. But I still think the team's window, culture etc plays a big role. People want to play for the Pens because it's a good hockey town and a history of a well-run competitive organization (at least in the last 30 some years.) The Panthers play in front of half-filled arena with very little solid following. And this was really the first year that they've been a contender, in quite a while. So there are pros/cons to every area. People talk about Carolina's great team/atmosphere but not too long ago that fanbase seemed pretty disinterested and that wasn't a very attractive place to play. So there is going to be cycles too.

I stumbled in the Colorado BS thread and someone said TW needed a hockey BS thread so I posted a link to here lol.
    My bad.
Still it will be fun when the Avs meet teams with actual defense from the East. ;)
Should have been the Canes but we lost Freddie Andersen in net. Next year for us.

When Gretzky showed up in the 90s it seemed like out here in Socal rinks were built everywhere. It was an abundance of beer leagues and youth programs and to this day it still is. I think probably soon enough another Canadian team will come south. The money isn't there for them especially with the governmental constraints on everything. The Canadians on here could elaborate. Definitely know more than I do about Canada that's for sure.

Ya I think Gretz going out to Cali was what the league wanted / hoped for. Trying to grow the game in 1 of the most popular areas of the USA, warmer climate etc. And it certainly worked. I still don't see any Canadian teams leaving. The only one would maybe be Ottawa and that's more because their ownership seemed shady. But I think the teams up there all have crazy fanbases and I still don't think it's hard for teams to sign guys, as long as the teams are run the right way.

I think Edmonton pre McDavid was just a organization that drafted poorly, even though they had top picks year after year. And they had so much turnover everywhere. Now they have 2 megastars but I think they are so afraid to upset them, that they play a type of game that 100% runs through them playing wide open. It's great for stats and great for them to contribute but terrible for a team to win a championship. Sid played crazy when we first got him, as did Geno. But we didn't start to win until the team played better as a whole. Sid actually had less individual highlights of him going end to end etc when we started winning. He became a better overall player and playmaker and less of a human highlight reel. Somewhat same case for Geno. So we will see if Edmonton is willing to make that change, both as an organization and their stars. I doubt it though. Easier to just blame the coach, goalie, refs, defense etc every year.

What's the old adage? Canadian teams don't win cups anymore. Now let's go rangers!

Tampa looks to be in form. Will be interesting if NYR can get momentum back, at home.
