They said it needs cleaning/service but it looks clean to me…. it’s opening fine too. Are they just trying to upsell me?

Yes, but you can wipe that gunk out of there before you button it up again.

    Oh look, another mod....

Is "They", a dealership? If so, then yes, they are trying to upsell you. It's what they do.

Most of the buildup will be on the rear side and behind the flange. You can open it with your hand and look into it and easily clean it with $4 can of throttle body cleaner and some shop towels.

Dealer did the same to me and MAFS. I only go in for my annual inspection. I tell them no for everything and request a print out and do it myself.

Mine looked about the same as yours last year, I just cleaned it and the MAFS, then did the wife's car since I had everything out.

Thanks all. This is helpful. Don't know much about this part... so didn't want to rule out their rec. but it did seem fishy. will do it myself.

My son and I cleaned his 2017 Corolla last week for the first time. The exterior looked super clean, but inside it was quite dirty. You have to turn the ignition on and hold the gas pedal down to open it up. A few paper towels and some cleaner worked just fine.

Probably not a good idea for a regular Joe doing it on a running engine, IMO.

You're absolutely right, cleaning the throttle body with the engine running is the correct way to do it, so you should never do it that way. LMAO

Seriously, how clumsy and stupid do you think the "average Joe" is that they can't wipe down the throttle blade and spray cleaner without losing anything down the intake?

I didn’t read that the engine was running. I read that he had the ignition in the on position such that the throttle control was getting juice. Generally speaking everything gets juice if the ignition is on regardless of whether the engine is actually running.
