I don't know if it's just Toyota dealers, but I'll tell you what get's me. Some of these trucks are over 5 years old.
So, dealer sold once, truck was paid off, maybe...now they are selling at at new cost or more than what it originally went for.
Basically selling the same vehicle twice. It's a racket I tells ya.

I'm not seeing any mark-ups on Tacomas in Alabama. I built my truck on-line, signed the final paperwork and paid a deposit for them TRYING to locate what I wanted. My problem is the availability of specific colors and factory options. I was told recently by a dealership employee that Toyota plans to increase production this Summer to play catch-up, but I have no way of confirming this...

I just found/purchased my "unicorn" new 2022 Tacoma Sport Access Cab 4x4 in Lunar Rock for MSRP with $0 mark-up and $0 Dealer add-ons from Kendall Toyota in Bend, OR.
In addition, is was a low-optioned truck, so I didn't have to pay any extra $5000 for headlight wipers, extra safety crap, etc.

I live in Arizona and all of the dealers here either rarely carry the Access Cab, have a 6-month wait list, have MSRP mark-ups, or $4000 worth of Dealer "rustproofing"/paint protection/window tint. A joke.
Would rather pay the $1400 to have it shipped to my house, then have to "grovel" with the pigs from the dealerships.

California had some of the trucks I wanted, but they were the worst: can't ship any out of state, $5000+ over MSRP, Dealer add-on garbage, or any combination of these reasons.
Sad, in this day and age, I can have something delivered to my house from Amazon in 2 hours, but I can't get the truck I want from hundreds of dealerships across the country who have them.

As far as I am concerned, ANY, new, 4x4 V6 Tacoma you can buy for under $40,000 (around MSRP) before taxes is reasonable. There are tons of 4cyl Tacomas on dealer lots because they get similar gas mileage to the V6, but they have the same horsepower (horrible) as my 2008 Yaris, AKA "Black Beauty".

Being a previous Tundra and Silverado owner, I don't buy trucks for the gas mileage...that's what my commuter, Shitbox Yaris is for. $3000 bucks used and 40mpg ALL DAY!

...and if Toyota ever decides to get rid of the Tacoma V6s or add some silly turbo set-up like the new Tundra V6s, the current Tacoma V6s will be even more in demand.

    Just my 2 cents.

Toyota does not make it easy to buy a truck.

Ya and to make things worse in CA. you pay sales tax on the total not the difference between trade in and the new item. Plus any new vehicle in CA. was taxed at original purchase then you pay tax again on a resale. EVERY TIME.

Took a little bit of digging but I found a dealer within 2 hours that was MSRP. Others were trying to charge way over sticker and said it would be impossible to get a truck. In the end it took about a month to get an allocation

The market sucks right now, but what's even more amazing is how dealers think people are just crazy or stupid. I was at the dealership yesterday to bring my wife's Prius in for service so I killed time wandering the lot. There was a new 22 Sport 4x2 with a premium package that had an MSRP of $43k. Next to the factory sticker was the dealer's supplement that had a $3,996 market value adjustment and a $1,700 charge for running boards. It would still suck, but it would hurt just a bit less if they called it a $5,200 market adjustment instead of insulting people's intelligence and pricing running boards at $1,700. Ironic thing was that as I was driving home I get a text and an email saying "Hey, this is the sales department. Stop by and talk to us about trading for a brand new vehicle with no money out of pocket!" I took a deep breadth before I answered so I could reply politely :)

So the sticker had a MSRP of $43k? Or was that the dealer ask price?

MSRP was just a bit north of $43k. The dealer add-ons took it above $48k. The premium package had an MSRP of $3,800 so if it was just a plain ole 4x2 Sport MSRP would have been around $39k

5k market adjustment for an sr5? Yikes, that's a terrible deal.

How does that 5k markup compare to the inflation rate since the "MSRP" was published?

Kind of irrelevant since you can buy an SR5/TRD etc. without a 5k market adjustment.

Not everything "inflates" when inflation happens. Certain things will actually come down in price when inflations happens.

Not sure why are you such an advocate for charging market adjustments on vehicles.

Just got word from the dealer that it’s in transport. Looks like it’s going to arrive a month earlier than they originally anticipated. Guess it’s going to be time to sell my current sport
