What are your honest thoughts on remote tailgate lock?

The OEM lock kit is one of the most functional mods you can do to your truck if you have a tonneau cover or a camper shell. Hell, even if you don't have a cover or shell it is still worth doing. And the install is pretty easy, even a caveman could do it.

 

Installing the OEM tailgate lock was one of the best mods that I have done to my truck. Just click the remote or grab the door handle and it's unlocked.

I second that. OEM lock kit is not that much more that Pop-n-lock, it plugs in nicely into factory harness. What is there to think about?

 

After having full keyless entry back there, I would never go back.

 

I would like to see an inline switch or key-press option to activate/deactivate the tailgate lock. Not too keen on auto unlocking and locking of the tailgate when simply using the truck but not the tailgate.

That’s the default behavior when configured for one press driver door unlock. Two press does passenger and tailgate as the tailgate feeds off passenger.

Perhaps you are keenly concerned about the extra cycles and routinely take passengers with you?

replacing just the tailgate portion is 1/4 to 1/3 the work and no crawling. I’m not remotely concerned about wearing mine out.

 

After watching a few videos, it seems very simple? Not many people like to pop off the panels, running boards, crawling under the truck and running the wires front to back. Un-locking the connections seems simple enough too.
Today I prefer to have someone else do the work. Keeping my life more simple. (Retired).

 

I wouldn't worry about it at all personally, though you could do the switch method if you really insisted by running one of the wires through a switch mounted at the location of your choosing. Problem with that is if you put it in the cab, you will naturally find yourself hating it when you're standing at the tailgate, wanting to unlock the gate but you have to go over to the cab and reenable the switch again before the power lock will work. It would be faster at that point to just use the key to let yourself in which then defeats the purpose of installing the power lock to begin with. Plus, with the switch flipped you would not get the security of automatic locking like you get with the module working as designed.

Usually these types of devices are pretty rock solid and last a long time. Hell, door locks don't act up all that much and they have cables involved in their operation. So personally I wouldn't worry about it. Absolute worst case, if the motor dies find a used one or buy a new kit and swap just the motor itself in about 10 minutes and be set for same length of time.

Being tied to the passenger door and the second unlock click should at least spare it a little life, unless you changed the truck settings to do one click unlocks the whole truck. Even if you did that, I still wouldn't worry about the tailgate lock wearing out. Worst case if the lock module wears out then you're back to square one opening the gate with a key like you always did before. Just my thoughts anyways.

 

Does anyone have the remote tailgate lock AND the bed lighting kit? My dealer told me it's one or the other....

 

Any of the plug and play kits are very simple. I believe they are all plug and play by now. The worst part is lying under the truck on your back and zip tying the harness to looms or brackets on the frame, though that part isn't horrible either. The worst part to me was zip tying it in the muffler area because the muffler is close to the frame and makes it hard to get your arm up there. Obviously, let the exhaust cool off before digging all up in that area.

 

I added the OEM tailgate lock kit and the OEM bed lights to my 2021. They have nothing to do with each other at all, sounds like the dealer is out of the loop. On a 2020+ the wiring is there for the bed lights in the tail light area. Just pull the tail lights, pop in the lights and plug them in after removing the dummy plug that seals the stock unused wiring.

The tailgate lock has nothing to do with the bed. it goes into the tailgate and the wiring runs through the tailgate, into the bottom of the bed and down the frame and up into the cab.

 

I thought it sounded odd, too. However, my salesman sent me pics of the order screen indicating that both accessories weren't compatible. Assuming you're correct, I'll be adding the lights myself after I take delivery. Thanks!

 

could be a glitch, but the same lights and tailgate lock are supposed to fit a 2022 that fit my 2021, so you should be good.

My two cents my wife is an insurance adjuster and says that with parts being scarce she is seeing a lot of claims for stolen tailgates. That is why I put one in. I lock the doors and the tailgate is locked.
