That ecoflo just looked too big and bulky for how i want to use it. Im also not into buying the first version of something electronic.

Im going to be mounting the expedition essentials over priced 4 board maxtrax mount to the passenger side door of the camper. Anyone thats done this have a part number for the struts id need? Spoke to SP today and they walked me through the mcmaster carr web site to order the right stuff, but the female end pieces are on back order.

My solution was to just use the female ends from the ones that are on the struts that come with the camper, but i dont know if those come off easily or not. If none of this makes sense, please say so, and ill provide photos.

Adding some detail on how I wired in the 3rd brake light on my 3rd Gen Tacoma.

I didn't like the look of the wire coming out of the camper through one of the visible covers, and saw mention of someone drilling a hole up through the underside of the truck rail and through the camper corner.

After removing the DS tail light, I estimated where the bottom of the camper was and for my truck it aligned with an opening in the top of the bed rail where the plastic clip from the rail cap came through, with plenty of room for an eventual 1/2" drill bit (stepped up a few times). I believe the corners have a similar metal plate as those that cover the other holes throughout the camper so drilling through the aluminum was simple.
    IMG_0689.jpg
Here's another view from the inside of the camper
    IMG_0683.jpg
And for reference for anyone with a 3rd gen unsure of what wire to tap, here is what I used in order to have running lights as well as brake lights.
    IMG_0688.jpg

Since I'll be keeping my battery setup in the front left corner of the bed, I figured I may drill a hole in this plate under the campers front left corner to get wires into the channels in a clean way.

Let me know if others have thoughts on this solution for wiring.

Can someone get me a measurement, how much usable roof space is in front of your camper on a 3rd gen?
Im going to mount a cargo box up front on top on my roof rack.

I've got a 3rd Gen DCLB and some rough measurements for you. It's about 35.5in from the front of the camper to the edge of the windshield. My best estimation is you have around 20-24in of usable (roughly flat) space.

Ok, here are a couple of photos of what I did. This is on a 1st Gen Tacoma. First photo shows the covered opening on the right under the old style door latch pin. Second photo looks through this opening to the left rear corner of the SP. Note that there is a rectangular opening in the SP at this point exposing the bed rail below, and that I have drilled a hole through my bed rail, and that there are wrapped wires coming up through that drilled hole. In fact these wires are the three brake light wires along with my video cable from my backup camera mounted on the brake light. This drilled hole leads directly into the left rear light housing, where the brake light wires are connected. The video wire travels further through an existing factory opening below, and then under the vehicle to my radio. Not sure what you 2nd and 3rd Gen guys do with your paper thin metal and wobbly rails, but this is what I did. Hope this helps 2FDDD1E3-1B59-4890-A0EE-220F255D2915.jpg802A5CFA-D930-462E-8607-26B16BBA50C2.jpg

Finally installed the 180R, got to say its perfect for my needs. Like how simple it is and doesnt weigh a ton. Its a tight fit, but plenty of clearance.

Couple pictures, note i did have to remove my handle from the camper, but i am going to look and see if there is a smaller profile one i can get or maybe some paracord ones. Used 2 SP awning mounts. Awning comes with 4 bolts ended up getting 4 more as each mount can support 4. Just felt like they where missing, but they only include 4 to mount it. They are M8x20mm- 1.25 thread pitch, 30mm will work too!

only thing i think i need to make are pull tabs for the latches so its easier to pop open.

single swing out does get in the way of one of the down poles, but i can just open the swing out more or angle it.

I ALMOST got this one, but wasnt sure it would fit back there. Looks great. Is it big enough? It looks like it barely covers the tailgate. Is the space useable? Be honest!

yeah the space is usable provides cover for getting in and out of the camper. Also this is where we primarily cook. so would provide shade and keep us semi dry from afternoon rain or spotty showers if we where at camp.

Thanks for the photos. Considering this. Closed dimensions are much taller than I thought. Can you tell me what the height is above the closed camper top. Also, how far out does it extend from the rear when opened? Thanks.

I finally just got through all 320 pages of previous posts. @XPOTRPR awning brackets look good. Fun to see all your progress over the past while.

Question for you all, I am considering the SP X1, I have not seen one in person though. Anyone located in Michigan that would be willing to show it to me if the location/timing works out?

    TIA

:woot: nice! I like it a lot! Clearance at the top/handle/latches doesnt seem too bad. My plan was the same as yours, replace the handle with a soft one. Definitely makes me want to make some different awning pole mounts though... Looks like anythign coming out/up front that back T Slot rail wont clear the awning..

Awesome! Thanks for that. Hopefully someone can help you out. If it means anything.. I didnt see one in person until install myself. Almost made it even more exciting and worth it.

oh yeah... I like that coverage. That will be perfect with our dual swingouts.
