What are your honest thoughts on remote tailgate lock?

I have the pop n lock and use the bed all the time. It is kinda loud but the usefulness of it makes it worth it. I’ve never had the oem so I can’t comment on that.

 

I had a Pop’n’Lock on my Frontier that was really loud. OEM on the Tacoma. I kind of miss the loud noise of the P&L, really made you aware that it locked. You basically don’t hear the OEM at all unless you’re standing right by it. Which is fine, it’s reliable enough that I’m not worried about it but I liked the satisfying loud thunk as I grew used to it.

 

They put a damper on it to reduce the noise, you can barely hear it now.

weeks after I installed 4 of my neighbors tailgates got popped because they weren't locked...

 

you know I never thought about it but I do actually listen for it to hear if it locked or not.

 

Bought my 2019 new. Next morning I came out to admire her, only to find my tail gate was down covered with misc clothes. A transient had used it as a sorting table. My blood boiled as I purchased my first mod. Toyota factory integrated tailgate lock. One of the many downsides of living in seattle proper

 

Yeah I mean the beep will tell me as well but depending on what part of the truck I’m near that beep may be too muffled to hear. So the tailgate lock is nice to have as a loud extra indicator. On the frontier there was no unlock beep or honk, it only made noise when locking so the tailgate was definitely nice for telling me it unlocked successfully.

Installed mine today. The hardest part was to clip together stupid plastic wire protectors. BTW; don't install them until you plug in the harness into the actuator and secure the metal clip. Trust me on this

 

I went OEM and it was plug and play on my 2017. Very quiet, smooth functioning.

I had the same problem with those 2 plastic clips for the wires. Mark the wires with a silver sharpie to see where they fit in the openings and then give yourself a little extra slack when clamping them shut and you should have just enough wire slack to set them back in place.

 

There was one video ,where the guy mark the wires before un- clipping from bed connectors. When re-installing you had the proper lengths. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

 

Its not the camera harness, it's the lock's harness. you need to completely install it inside the tailgate first to know how much of it to feed under the bed. I went by what I saw on the videos and came up short in the tailgate, so I had to remove the stupid clips and readjust everything. Anyway just a heads up to someone who's doing it for the first time.

After living with my Tacoma for a month now, my 2 biggest annoyances have been the size of the radio knobs (seriously, could they be any shallower?) and having to manually lock/unlock the tailgate. First world problems, right?

It's not that manually locking/unlocking the tailgate is onerous, but I haven't had to regularly use a physical key on my daily driver since probably the late-1990s. Over the past month, half the time I get something out of the bed, close & lock the tailgate, get 50 ft away, and my brain is like, "Wait, did you really lock the tailgate?" And so I have go back and check it, even though I know I locked the damn thing. So personally, I like the peace-of-mind knowing that when the truck is locked, so is the tailgate...especially this time of year, when I often have my son's baseball gear in the back. It's also a hell of a lot easier when someone needs something out of the bed...I don't need to give them my keys to go get it, I can just unlock it remotely and they can go get what they need.

PK3B635JS0) from my dealer. On Saturday, I installed it on my 2022 TRD Off-Road DCSB...an incredibly easy, straightforward install that took about 2 hours. I wish it was included from the factory...like it does seemingly every other truck out there.

Tailgate gate lock. Wish it was a standard item too. Especially on the TRD OR & PRO. Considering the price we paid. Or offer as a option. (Never mention when I purchase my Tacoma , nor was I aware).

Tacomods radio knobs $24.00 ? For Hawaii, we need to add shipping cost too.
I rarely ever use those knobs? I had to go and take a look at mines. We use the steering wheel buttons. Or touch screen.
For my self, I never had a problem.with those knobs the few times I had use them.
I found this interesting, how popular these radio knobs mod became.

Replacing a stolen tailgate? Costly! Or anything from the bed too.
I think if we all made a list of things we wish Toyota could have done better? Almost a “Endless list.”!

Everyday the Tacomods radio knobs bring a smile to me. One of my favorite mods.

The OEM knobs are practically useless.

 

I must be the odd ball? I find nothing wrong with the radio knobs. One turn the radio on and off and controls the volume. The right hand knob just tunes to change stations.
