HELP! Clicking noise under the dash.....

Hey all, new to the forum, i just bought a 2011 taco double cab 4x4 and i haven't even hit 500 miles yet and the other day i was leaving the store and i was on a steep incline in the parking lot and when i took my foot off the brake and the truck rolled back a bit, and i gave it gas to move forward, made this clunk and started a clicking sound in the driver side which sounds like it is coming from under the dash. It only does it when the truck rolls back a bit and then i start to move forward. On level ground taking off, everything is normal.

Anyone else ever had this happen? Its driving me crazy and i haven't had a chance to get to the dealer yet. It almost sounds like a relay clicking under the dash.

may be the traction control.....
these new vehicles and all their "safety enhancements" drive me crazy too. but the payout is well worth it.

Nice I will find one, actually a guy that I work with has one! So just to confirm....this is something that i shouldn't worry about? If it is hill assist, then should it actually roll back?

 

park ranger or ford ranger? i wont park on a park ranger as i like them too much......if i'm gonna park on a ford ranger, i better hurry up as this will be their last year.......

I don't think what you're hearing is the HAC. In our Highlander, I have to press the brake pedal quickly and hard to the floor, then it beeps and literally locks the vehicle in place (it's a weird feeling when you let your foot off the brake and it doesn't roll one millimeter).

And since yours is rolling, that doesn't sound like HAC.

 

I am going to try and turn it off tomorrow and see what happens. Hopefully it will do something so I can try and eliminate the possibilities of what it could be. if not guess will just have to take it to the dealership. Hopefully they don't try and tell me it is normal. I worked in the car business for 12 years and I know what it is doing can't be normal.

 

Lol yea I figured that out this morning. Also got a ticking noise in engine compartment that gets slightly louder as I accelerate I did notice the harder I accelerate, it gets a little louder, but when at idle, and I rev the engine, it doesn't make the same sound. Sorry for all the questions this is my first truck first Toyota and first 4x4. Always driven Hondas.

 

Yes exactly I have noticed it in the same conditions. Is this something that I should worry about or just leave it?

 

It definitely sounds like manifold leak. But we will see I am gonna take it in to dealer and let the look at the other problem.

 

What you are hearing is the traction control kick on. When you roll back the truck takes it as its slipping when you hit the gas if it rolls back fast enough. Its completely normal. Nothing to worry about. Mine does it once in awhile if I don't hit the gas fast enough and rolling back a little when I start. Now if its doing it all the time on a hill, then you are either letting it roll back too much or something is up with it. I think someone else asked, but does it beep also? Best way to descriibe the beep I mean is, almost like an old pager beep.

 

I took it to the dealer the other day and all is good the ticking noise is normal I heard a brand new one drive by while I was outside the service department and it was doing the same thing, as far as when it rolls back yes it did beep real quick and they explained to me what was happening there too. Also normal. At least that is what they said. Oh well got 75000 mile warranty so I am not gonna worry about it and thanks you all for the great info on this. It helped out a lot.

 

So i am going to add to this thread again, as after spending some time on the forum today I have noticed a lot of people talking about this ticking noise under the truck, which under moderate to heavy acceleration is loud and completely annoying and everyone keeps saying on the threads, that it is normal, albeit it sounds like an exhaust leak, or better yet, old ass 1970 something model Chevy or Ford. People have said that they would do things to try and mask it, some would use higher octane fuel, and some would switch to full synthetic. Some said that it just seems to have went away over time. For me, I have right over 1600 miles on my 2011 Taco and the noise has not gotten any less than it was from day one. My level of frustration with this is beyond comprehention. I am truely hoping that the levels that I am frustrated to go away over time, because I love my truck! Just got some new wheels for it, which I think look sick!

My question is, has anyone found a way to dampen the sound, I have a flowmaster 50 series muffler, which is running same route as factory, no dual exits or anything. Didn't do anything at the levels of acceleration in which I am hearing the noise.

I have also been told that a short ram or cold air will not dampen the noise either. Any suggestions since this is obviously not something that is going to go away because according to every dealership, its "normal".

Thanks guys for taking time to read this, I more or less needed to vent, no one that I know hears it, which is beyond me, but I know that you guys know how it feels, and just wanted to see what you all have to say, or what you have done to get over the noise.

 

I was sensitive to the ticking for about 2500 miles. I am now at 10k and It doesn't bother me. The truck really seemed to "break-in" around 2500 miles, like night and day, the performance continues to increase and mileage is a constant 21mpg, on flat terrain. My guess is you will eventually get used to the ticking and realize that you own a super nice vehicle.
