The disappointing feature of the Tacoma E- locker is it can only be use for under 5miles per hour, and they recommend you turn it off ,once you clear the obstacle.
When driving on loose rocks and sand , I think it is better to keep the lockers on even at higher speeds.

I prefer higher speeds on sandy beaches, and more fun too.
Ford Rangers , Colorado, Nissan, the lockers are less limited. More useful!

 

Agree! When I go to the desert, I flip the switch for my ARB locker when I pull off the highway and it stays on until I am headed home and about to pull onto the highway.

 

ARB lockers one of the best lockers to own. ARB makes quality products.
A fellow worker I knew who own a diff rebuild business and retired in Hawaii, he prefer running just one air locker and installed in the front diff of his Jeep. He believes if you had to choose one , the front to him was better then the rear. Because the front tires pulls vs rear where it pushes up hills and over obstacles.

Like front wheel drive cars.

 

Yes, the ARB is the second choice, but could be first IF…when the locker is switched on, will the traction control turn off?
I’d imagine that there are heads that own a SR5 that installed one, so is the traction control an add on feature to help even more, or can it do damage to the traction control system being both wheels are locked? Hence the Elocker. Yes, if I wheeled full time, I’d do the front as the trac is very good for an open in the rear. Now, I’m spending more time hauling big wood out of piles for firewood. I use the Taco as a skidder. As is, it’s done well. But I know a locker will do even better. And much safer than a winch to me.

BTW, as you know, when locked and on lose stuff, and on D, you can roll as hard as you want. One of my favorite pass times at Azuza was the 2nd Gen locked in the rear, in their mud pool which was around an acre or so, and pretty much flat. I don’t recall switching off the nannies, just unwinding that 4.0 in a sweet symphony☠️

 

That is a cool feature to have utilizing the air locker. Crossing a river and a flip of the switch for on demand locking. No neutral.

 

The Colorado Z42 with push button lockers, front and rear. I am sure cheaper to install then the Tacoma 4x4 system with crawl controls, and less problems to go wrong and fix.

Plus the Colorado ZR2 with the front and rear lockers, will out perform on more obstacles then then Tacoma TRDs and Pro models!
But the Tacoma has a better reliability then the Chevy and GMCs . Those lower hanging shock mounts on the Colorados, not sure why, when the aftermarket relocation kits works .

 

ARB says you should not engage the locker under power. I don't shift to neutral to lock/unlock but I stop for a second.

 

Wooops! Thought I saw the owner in a video saying you can, just don’t have the throttle to the metal.

I have a tough decision. I like both as both have their pros and cons.

It’s a 2018 with only 21,000 miles on it. A locker would help for a trade in value someday. I say someday, because having no monthly payments atm is golden.

 

Good stuff as I’m a Chevytown fan. However, it’s hard to beat Toyota’s value for ownership and trade-in values.

 

ARB says you can shift the lockers on when driving,but both wheels need to be spinning the same speeds. But recommended to stop first or the locker will “crash” is the term ARB uses.

Tacoma with crawl controls ? I don’t think the ARB air lockers will work with this system. Maybe front only and not using the crawl controls?

 

The Colorado Diesel motor, the diesel mileage the owners are getting (you tube )is over the factory’s sticker. (22) miles average.
Many are getting 25 and up to 30 miles , plus on highways.
Yes the horse power is not there, the reliability? Cost more to maintain and repair.

Still Colorado 4x4 front and rear lockers are superior, I think the new Broncos also offers this too.

Best off road system, just saw a YouTuber (engineer) testing a Rivian. Nothing can be better! Has the ultimate 4x4 traction, and you can lift the truck up to 13 inches? With a push of a button. Is the Rivian system.

 

I have an issue where using AUTO LSD in the dunes, under 30mph, there should be no VSC. It happens when the backend pitches at all, the throttle cuts and i get the loud zipper sound. Super dangerous when needing to keep momentum. Same thing happens in snow as well.

Not sure if anyone else has had this issue?

 

The Toyota mechanic mention that when the Trac controls are turn off, it will kick back on after 18 miles per hour? I am not sure about this? It was a few weeks ago. We were just checking out my brakes locking up.

I think Toyota safety features will over ride ? Toyota I think the system was not design for dune sands and driving fast on sand?

The old trucks you could built the trucks to handle the terrain you like driving on. Todays safety features kills those days?

Anti slip & traction controls? Especially for sand and mud? UM? ABS are OK. The more you learn about the Rivian electric 4x4 systems the more you want to get one!

 

Yeah in one place the manual says to take your foot off the accelerator and in another place it says to never flip the switch while accelerating.

 

My Toyota manual is in English, no wonder ? I need the common sense version?

Off the throttle and say, crossing a river, would be ideal instead of having to stop, put it in neutral. If ARB’s air locker assembly can handle that kind of punishment, I’m all in for front and rear. Put my non monthly payments to excellent use.

I’m going to research both as I don’t want the TRAC to be messed with when on 4lo and no need for lockers. Can’t have Chevytown out-locking a Taco!

 

I pondered some last night. I don’t wheel like I used to. Where I HAD to be on a hard trail or split after work to go cross a dry river bed full of boulders up in Los Padres National Forest. However, I still like to go on moderate trails and love the desert.

I have a lot of respect for the TRAC when using the 4x4 modes. I’m bending toward the truetrac now.

 

The loud zipper sound IS Auto LSD dude. It's not cutting throttle, it's pulsing the brakes on slipping wheels to send the power elsewhere. It can feel like it's cutting power because you're fighting the brakes.

 

If you haven’t seen this video, here is the AutoLSD doing its thing up a lose steep hill in 2WD. A 2 wheel drive truck should not be able to do this!
