Rusty hitch

Lads,

why can’t a car manufacturer NOT come up with a hitch that doesn’t rust. Not even Toyota. I expected it from Jeep but geez. Just venting but it looks like shait!! Bad pic but trust me it’s terrible

 

Just the start of the rust apocalypse

 

I live in the rust belt. My 2001 tundra factory hitch didn't have a spec of rust on it after 19 years being fluid flimed every fall. So far my 2020 tacoma hitch looks pretty good, but this time it got coated one time with cosmoline.

 

That gives you a reason to do a little truck tlc.
It's not just Toyota.
I'm sure the hitches go through a much different paint process than the body panels. They could add cost by power coating it but do most want to pay $25 extra to get a hitch
that you can fix in five minutes with that left over black rattle can you already have?
Not me.

 

i had 4 Jeeps and every one rusted maybe I’m traumatised now lol but it is a great excuse to do some more tlc on’r which I love doing

You should see how much rust your drive shaft has.

I mean it's low hanging at the rear of the vehicle it's basically being lightly sand blasted every time you drive plus it tends to get beat up by hitches and trailer tongues and made of big chunky mild steel with large flat surfaces corners and crannies, the boss is often wrap laminated for strength etc, all of which make it very difficult to get paint everywhere and to properly stick and plenty of places for salt and water to hide, what do you expect?

Rust-Oleum once a year and go on about your business, it's just the nature of the beast.

 

Like a lot of things it’s maintenance I have tons of Rust-Oleum make’r perdy!

Toyota did consider marketing the “TRD Stainless Steel Edition”, but it was proposed to sell for $125K plus $32K market adjustment if you live in the rust belt. The focus group said no beuno.

 

At a loss as why hitches or frames for that matter are not hot dip galvanized or plated before being painted.

 

Didn't happen as much on my hitch as it did on the front of my utility trailer. Once a year I'd spend 30-40 min with a wire brush and a black Rust-O-Leum rattle can and it looked good as new for another year.

Its not worth it. The majority of sales go to non-rust states, then the amount of trucks that survive with the original owner past the first 10 years where rust starts becoming a issue more than just cosmetic is so small that toyota can just recall the frames on those trucks.

 

They did stop doing that in Vermont and used a sand and stone mixture instead. So instead of rust I'd have to replace a windshield after every winter from the small stones being thrown into my windshield from the cars in front of me. Be careful what you wish for

 

MN used to use sand, you could always tell a car that was from MN because when the sun shined on the windshield, you couldnt see anything.

 

Its just toyota's have a history of rusting sooner. If you don't treat the steel surface with a corrosion inhibitor toyota metal just likes to rust better than most.
