    Hmmm. Bill of Rights.

They ain't what they used to be though. Unjustified fear of terrorism is chipping away my rights at an alarming pace...yet I don't feel safer.

    Someone will undoubtedly answer "freedom".

No sooner do I post it, and you predict the future 3 minutes before me ;)

I was trying to sum it up in one word...

What used to make being an American great in my mind was that most of the world looked up to us and strived to be like us for our ideals and beliefs. No one wants to be a fat, greedy, arrogant bully who can't manage his finances.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I was responding to cantac09's question.

No one is saying that freedom is an exclusive thing for Americans. I was looking for a single word. That summed it up best.

My answer was in that context...;)

Wow... good question. And one that I don't know if I feel qualified to answer. Having never been outside of the US I don't know what it's like elsewhere.
I would have to say it's our diversity.
We are a melting pot of hundreds of cultures and religions from all around the world. Now, we may not always get along but I think, despite what the media might show, we do a pretty good job for the most part.
I'm not saying that it's not like that elsewhere, just speaking from my experience and what little I know.
