Extremely disappointed in the mileage. Love the truck but jeezuz it’s not like it’s a powerhouse by any stretch, or heavy. For such a moderately powered little truck I expected to get 10 or 11 litres per 100 kms like a buddy of mine does with his F150 5.0 V8.
Hoping it gets a bit better on the next tank.

    JUNE 11 UPDATE:
Almost 3000 kms on the truck now and I’m thrilled at the improvement in mileage. I’m down to 10.5 litres/100kms average and had it down to 9.5 all highway. It keeps getting slightly better so I’m satisfied.

These trucks are actually pretty heavy. Within 10-15% of a same year F150 of comparable build, combined with fairly antiquated engine technology. My 09 Access cab is within an inch or 2 of my step dads king cab 6.5' box 1998 Chevy Silverado. These are definitely not little trucks. There's a market for a new last gen Ranger sized P/U with a 6' bed, but no one wants to make one.

It's give and take with air filters. Either you get a filter that flows well and gets better power/mpg but in turn lets more stuff into the engine, or you get a really restrictive filter that lowres hp/mpg but keeps the engine really clean. There was a very comprehensive filter comparison posted to a fbook 1GFRE page if someone wants me to try to find it. But as stated above it's marginally noticeable results for a daily driver, matters much more if you're say, supercharged or turbo.

Can't really tell from the photo but the front end of my 2007 Tacoma is actually slightly higher than my 2002 Silverado. I'll eventually sell the Chevy. The cab of the Tacoma doesn't feel that much smaller than the Chevy's. Considering the Tacoma's size, I'm very satisfied with the fuel economy so far. First 2 tanks averaged over 20mpg.

I don't know why Toyota no longer makes the particular truck I have, 2.7L Access Cab with the 5 speed manual. Then again, I suppose I do know, less of a demand for 4 cylinder 4WD truck and a manual transmission. For me it's ideal.

I think as the 3rd gen trucks got bigger and heavier and the technology of the 3.5 liter 6 cylinder advanced, fuel economy gains from the 4 cylinder pretty much disappeared. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the 4 cylinder as well.

Rest assured the Toyota engineers have done all they can to eek every MPG they can out of these engines. Aftermarket gimmicks and shade tree tricks are useless.

That 4 cylinder will be more than adequate for most of us. And reliable to the moon and back. I used to be a GM fanboy, and I say dump the Chevy while the tranny still gets out of second.

That's my priority - adequate and very reliable. Not too familiar with the 3.5 V6 - or Toyota for that matter. This is my first - owned many Hondas and Subaru cars and SUVs over the years. I had a CR-V before I got the Tacoma, retirement is approaching so wanted to downsize to one vehicle. I never thought I'd be able to find a Tacoma - even 15 years old that was within my cash budget, so I made the move earlier than expected. Very glad I did, I'll still look for the heck of it and there's absolutely nothing within reach now in my state. Everything is newer and close to $20k or above.

Been lucky I guess with the Chevy. Needs a battery, I'll charge it for about an hour and it'll start and run fine. Has some rust of course. Speaking of which - I haven't really seen many Tacomas with rust around the wheel wells. My son's 2009 Ram has big time rust. My other son's 2010 Ram not so much. Absolutely none on the body of my 2007 Tacoma. I wonder why that is? Great situation, but how do they typically manage to be rust free on the body at least?

Maybe 20 or more years ago the CAI stuff had some merit, depending upon the vehicle of course.

I'm betting at least part of this is your truck is new and learning your driving habits etc

I bought an Ultragauge and use the data to improve my MPG. Works for me.

I go 10 over posted. Sometimes more sometimes less. I also always drive in the right lane. You’re only an @$$hole if you hang out in the left lane or follow too close. I have a trailer hitch for tailgaters.

Why doesn't it surprise me that the US has the highest motor vehicle fatality rate of all the G8 countries, save for Russia?

    Oh fatality, not failure. :bananadead:

I'd say distracted driving. Speed isn't a good thing in the public road, but with the amount of people speeding there are not that many accidents.

I'd tend to agree with you re. distracted driving.
If it was up to me, any screens viewable by the driver would be banned in cars. They make about as much sense as having a Ram mount for your cell phone attached to a chainsaw or onto your hunting rifle; focus on and enjoy the task at hand.
As far as speeding goes, the only country without speed limits (Germany) has far fewer deaths per billion km's traveled. From my experience, driving is taken more seriously on the other side of the oceans. Heck, German cars didn't even have any cupholders until the mid 90's.

I have a V6 but after doing all that mileage went down to ... The same.

There's not much you can do to improve the efficiency on a V6 or the I4. Wheels and tires are what kills efficiency, since I did all that and mine is the same still.

I wonder how hard they are really trying. I got better mileage with my 1985 22R engine, about 28 mpg. They've had 37 years to improve and have done nothing to improve. There must be other motives at work to keep mpg down. I have a hard time believing it is all an emissions problem.
