I made it up to gold lake this past weekend. Got there Thursday night and the place was pretty much full. Pretty wild, never seen that many people there this early in the year (2 weeks ago there was still snow on the trail in to the campsite).

I did make my way to the top ridge where snake lake starts, and looped back down. Had to winch some trees out of the way and dig out some snow drifts. So the FYI, 4x4 club that manages the trail has not been through there yet so I’d imagine the trail had unforeseen challenges as wheel. Sure hope that place doesn’t turn into another bowman lake :(:(:(:(

If my truck can clear a tree I just leave it blocking the trail for this exact reason.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I'm going to come off as being preachy here. Not my intention, but it's going to sound that way anyway.

That's one of my pet peeves. If you're going to clear the trail, clear it. I always keep in the back of my mind these two things:

What happens, later in the season, if there is a fire back here, and they need to get trucks through?
What happens, later in the season, if there is someone back here that requires Emergency Services? (like a kid or something)

I'll replace the boot, when the boots, clamps get here... and I get around to it. They are OEM and I'm manual hub. They just sit there most of the time.

No offense taken, my logic is that if morons can't get back there in the first place they can't hurt themselves or start fires.

    Lightning can get anywhere.

Also. A couple of examples I've experienced, just this year.

There is a spur road off 3N26 in SNF - 3N26A. I went down it, to see if I could clear it. So many years have gone by with trees being half assed cleared, it would take 10 people all day to clear it to the end (the end, could be a decent spot on a nice creek that feeds the Clavey River). = lost road, lost spot.

3N14Y is almost in that same condition. Trees were left on the road, where no one wanted to take the time to clear them. The shrubs are overtaking the road where you can't get through without some pretty good pin stripes... I don't care about pin stripes... but that road was about to be lost. I cleared it, and camped at the end. It's a pretty nice, secluded, spot on the Clavey, that was about to be lost.

More lost spots, means more people in LESS spots.

3N25 is in need of clearing too... I can tell, the people who have "cleared it" are probably hunters that don't want every Tom, Dick and Harry back there (which is understandable, but not really great etiquette... the National Forest is everyone's Forest) if we have a hard winter, and it gets many more trees down, that road is going to be a mutherfuker to clear.

A tree you can drive over is a limb. If it’s being run over, it will break down over time. If you’re driving over something that others could hang up on, clear it.

2N29 - To Bourland Trestle is starting to get the same way. It's starting to become a bit of an issue to get back there. Trees in the road aren't being completely cleared.

I imagine Forest Service will eventually clear that one though, if it gets much worse, since it's a bit of a landmark.

Obstacles and obstructions are different. If I can drive over a tree -- so can the wildfire crew. I also don't think it's my responsibility to build trails so that people can drive it on 31s with no armor.

You'd be amazed at the places a proper moron on 31's with no armor can get into. :anonymous: That said, we almost always are clearing trees on FS roads. It's ok to pay it forward, both for others to enjoy our outside spaces and the FS employees that get to take care of the stuff that is too sketchy for us.

Thank you both for keeping it civil. :fistbump:

Not suggesting it was or is your responsibility to clear trail. Just my guideline as to what to cut or not.

I see trail clearing as part of the duty of using the trail if you have the capabilities to clear the obstruction.

There’s many people that fall into this catorgory, rig not really built, but skill level to go many places.

the issue I run into the most is the opposite category …overly built rig lacking the knowledge of how to respect the trails and campsites. And ultimately lacking the best mod of them all, “driver mod”. Seat time goes a long way.

    For sure.

But now, Larry has the skills AND his rig is pretty well built. Can't wait to rip NRT with him this weekend :burnrubber:
