Gardening Thread - Show me your gardens!

It seems that cherry tomatoes are a weed! I had one grow last year with the soil I had used and this year I have literally 30 cherry tomato plants growing everywhere! lol Should I post a pic of the entire front yard as a garden? hahaha.

 

I am in GA, so it stays in mid 90s June thru August, with occasional 100s in July and August.
I switched to raised beds, as we got older and our backs got worse. Less bending and more control over soil. My beds are a mix of leaves for carbon, top soil, peat moss for water retention. Every 2 years I add polymer water pearls with the seedlings. Mulch beds with pine shavings every year. Soil gets turned in the fall, so mulch starts decomposing for the next year. Beds are lined with 30-year landscaping fabric, so soil stays in.
Fruit trees and berries are mulched with pine nuggets.
Eventually, all grass will be gone and it will be rows of beds and gravel in between.


This bed has tomatoes, marigolds and carrots.

 

Already harvesting sugar snaps here. Makes for an excellent stir fry, or just eating them fresh off the vine.
Still a few weeks out on the tomatoes and maybe a month on the corn. Tassels are starting to poke through.

 

I’ve never had any problems with something eating the leaves of my cucumbers and squash plants up to the stem. The neem oil I spray usually keeps them away. Any idea what else might be eating the leaves? I’ll take pics in the AM to show what I mean

I would think he meant transparent/translucent? Black plastic tends to kill whatever plants are trapped under it

The plastic that we used was transparent/translucent. I guess it acts like a greenhouse.

On really hot days I had to remove the plastic and water, then at night put the plastic back on. Good thing this was only for 2 week. Then the plastic went in the garage.

 

We use red plastic here. For tomatoes, peppers, melons, etc

We've had one day over 70°F

It helps immensely with heat and growth.

 

How long before the weeds grows in?

Weeds is one thing I hate about gardening.

 

Why red plastic?

Is it for color coding or red plastic helps with growth over translucent?

Not sure why anyone would use translucent. Seems like weeds would dig that.

 

Another cold day here. We had the honors the other day of being the coldest spot in the contiguous states. Yay!

I love it for biking, hiking etc.....gardening is a real challenge. Oddly, last year it was actually hotter than hell. Over 100°F. We had just moved in though. No garden yet last year.

EDIT: OTOH All the greens and such are loving the weather. Will post pics soon.

 

I used translucent plastic for my grass. I guessing the landscapers figure translucent will allow the sun through, while protecting from birds eating the seeds. I don't know if it plastic makes mold grow.

Perhaps a small animal? Deer, possum, raccoon, or squirrel? Could set up a trail camera to watch for what is getting into your plants.

 

not bad here, we got a small 18v rotortiller. Wife hits its about once a week.
