First any modifications, you better let your vehicle insurance provider know what you added to your Tacoma.
If you do not? The insurance company can consider this a fraud and void your insurance coverage.

I call Geico today, 2.5 lift, rims& tires, ,leer camper, rock sliders, they added a $92 every six months. a small price to pay vs no coverage and or fraud charges.

Note even interior modifications, any hard wire devices, like dash cams, stereos ,lighting, etc.

A guy in Canada add a aftermarket exhaust, crash his car, insurance company was not notified of this mod. He lost all of his coverage.

also note some vehicle insurance providers allows without notications? Best to call and ask?

note any aftermarket Tunes? You better let your insurance provider know because you increase. The Hp and performance.

Better to let them know for any modifications, even if they do not cover them.

The worst that can happen? Your insurance provider will denied all claims!

Not saying it can’t happen,,, but I’ve never heard of insurance being canceled from mods, just the policy not covering their replacement should something happen.

Same, never heard of it being canceled.....that seems very dumb if that's real.

It is best to call and add extra coverage for mods like you said so those can be replaced if something happened..but to deny ALL coverage? Sounds absurd.

Yeah, not buying this at all. I guess if you mod it with a Jet assist takeoff rocket they might say something but an after market exhaust? OP is ineffect saying you cannot put anything on that does not come from Toyota. What a crock of shit!

Oh wait, you said this happened in Canada. Fucking crazy Canucks! Never mind.

Sounds like FUD to me. I’ve turned in 2 claims in my lifetime and neither time did the insurance company ask about modifications or send a someone to inspect my automobile.

That said, unless I informed them about value increasing modifications, I would not expect them to cover the extra value in the case of a catastrophic loss.

EDIT: are we talking about liability insurance or collision insurance? I could see an insurance company declining to pay up in an accident, where you were at fault, that could be proved to be a result of a negligent modification. It would need to be a very expensive case though me thinks.

I do not know how vehicle insurance companies works. I was searching about the pros and cons of aftermarket tuning. One article mention you are changing the performance and you should notify you insurance provider.

Another article mention all mods , you should notify your insurance company, after learning you could be denied. Lucky Geico covers all my mods, and were notified. Just protecting my asset.
What they will reimburse for and the amount? I have No idea. I should have ask?

Now days insurance companies will find ways not to service your claims?

I think you heard wrong on the whole cancellation thing there buddy.
They won't cover mods and if a mod was deemed the cause of the crash then you are liable for the crash.
You are right tho... Call insurance add the mods and cheap coverage for doing it right.

I've been looking for agreed value insurance for my truck. Stated value is an option as well. So far I'm coming up empty. Truck is my daily and that's when it gets tricky.

Depends how much you have in mods though.

I totaled my 2013. I did not have a specific rider on my insurance for my modifications and still got roughly 50% of MSRP for everything I had a receipt for.

Anything they didn’t pay me out for that was easily removable I took back. I got $900 for a cap I paid $370 for as I didn’t have any receipts and planned on taking it off if they didn’t cover it for me.

I got more than I paid new for the whole truck when you factor in the modifications.

    YMMV.

If it was 10k in mods or so, that would be an option. It's way more than that. Modifications equal what the truck is worth at this point. And they can be sticklers about covering aftermarket parts even with a rider policy.

OP I think you got some bad advice and are now paying the price for unneeded coverage, for what sounds like a mostly-stock truck. The only time I've ever personally been asked to list mods on an auto insurance policy is for a classic car policy I have with State Farm. I own three classic cars, two of which have been heavily modified with different engines/transmissions, one even has a different body on it. All State Farm required was that I send photos of all sides of the car, the interior, engine and any significant modifications. Ten years ago I had a classic car policy with Auto Club and they required an Adjuster to come-out to take the pictures and document that the car lived in a closed garage.

My other trucks are all lightly modified (larger tires, cat back exhaust, nothing crazy). My Silverado does have a 4" lift, 33" tires and a camper shell. All of those were on it when I bought the truck, when I called State Farm to get coverage and I mentioned the mods, they just asked that I send them some pics of the truck.

Most of todays modification we do was not to add value, , and we know insurance company will not fully reimbursed us. We do the mods to make our truck a better off roader, some for looks and both. The cost is high.
I easy spent over $12,000. Not done yet. I am not a DIY person. Labors cost is high for me.

I do not expect insurance company to pay a large amount.
I modify my truck because I am making it to fit my needs and wants. The mods investment cost , is a loser in the long run. But the value to us is priceless.

if I wanted to save on mods , I would have brought a cheap car and stay home. Lol

Um, no, you heard the Canadian wrong. No insurance is going to not pay. They might not pay for mods.

mine won't pay for mods beyond a set limit. Fair enough - I will take them off and recover residual cost. I added Nitrogen to my tires. Should I report that? It is a mod. Just saying. Insurance Companies are not your friend - they will F you over every time they get a chance to make a nickel.

Any car insurance providers who may know how it works? The Mods? I am sure each insurance company will be different too.

Hawaii has a modify -NO fault insurance. Hawaii politician on both sides couldn’t agree to a true no-fault. So we got a half and half. A compromise, that was neither good nor bad. Kinda work, but kinda NOT.
Like a half a tank of gas, kinda gets you there, but not the whole distance.
