Wasn't the 05+ taco a new and updated T100 since the T100 and compact taco disappeared when the 2nd gen came in to the market?

For me it's the right sized price, mpg, and size. Under $20k to start and if it's anything like my tacoma I'd buy one for around 23k with just a modest package.

I agree with what’s been said; I’ll believe it when I see it. For some reason every car seems to be getting bigger. Look at the Corolla for example, it started as a teeny econobox car that could fit in the back of a Uhaul truck with room to spare, now it’s a big sedan that lost all the charm of the little zoom zoom car it used to be.

Americans have a taste for larger vehicles. SUV's and CUV's.

I'm not sure if that's actually the case for most people, or if it's just what car companies want consumers to think. Look a the Hilux and Tacoma minitrucks. They sold millions of them here; people couldn't get enough of them.

I think if anything it has to do with crash safety and fuel economy regulations. We love our lean mean minitrucks with excellent visibility, but manufacturers have to focus more on crash test results and aerodynamics now for better or worse.

Fuel efficiency and aerodynamics and safety are all that really matter now anyway; that and seeing who can cram as much electronics and driver assist garbage in as possible

My belief is that small trucklets have a future. They're utilitarian and economical. Not every American wants a giant vehicle. :)

Here's a Nissan tiny-truck in the Johannesburg airport a few years ago.

Given the buzz of the Maverick I'd say it'd be a wise move for Toyota to at least look into something similar.

I love my 3rd gen but miss the size of my 1st gen. I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. I'd really like the option of a compact truck.

I'd really be curious to see what they come up with if they do pull the trigger.

Everyone complains about every new iteration of a beloved vehicle getting larger and larger.

The reality is that the manufacturers must continually improve on their safety and safety ratings.

The big driver of model bloat is meeting the NHTSA standards.

Too, also, as well, any new vehicle will be at a minimum a hybrid.

Seeing as how the T100 ended production in 1998, not really, no.

The Tundra, which came out 2 years later, is the replacement for the T100.

    That's not exactly true.

There are plenty of cars out there with 75 airbags, yet remain relatively small. Smart Cars have better safety ratings than some cars twice its size.

    Bigger =/= safer

Especially if we wanna talk about pedestrian safety.

Me too. My Gen 2 is pretty nice, but I plan to keep my Gen 1 forever, and I can't say that about the Gen 2.

Personally I'd like to see Toyota offering a compact pickup again. I love my '96.

Loved my 1992 Extracab V6 5spd 4X4. Perfect size for just me and my wife. If Toyota made the same body on frame compact as my 1992 as a plug in hybrid I would buy one immediately. Only caveat would be the kids weren’t a factor. Love my 3rd gen for that.

Subaru made the Baja which was a four door Brat, basically.

I liked my Brat, but five new railroad ties at a time was about all it could handle.

I'm almost cerain it will be a Corolla Cross with a composite bed.

Now if I could get a regular cab compact pick up similar to a 1985 pick up or a 1st gen Tacoma, that didn't need to live in the right lane. That would something worth considering.
