Milling machine is fixed, man do I feel like an idiot.

Service guy was here 30 seconds and had it going, turned the glass scale off on X axis. He turned Y off about 5 years ago when we were having trouble with it. My baby is healed

 

Glass Scale?

 

There is a bar mounted with a piece of glass on it that a reader rides on. You can barely make it out what I circled in red. They get dirty, worn, etc. turning it off makes the machine read the encoder in the servo motor.

The last photo, the cable coming in from the top is attached to the reader that moves along the glass inside.

 

I can wrap my head around an experimental fusion reactor, but I can barely get this.

 

Smart idea not showing the key numbers. I could make a key to those numbers...

 

I have one of those MyQ dongles that came with my jackshaft opener, but I'm too paranoid about installing it. People hacking it and getting in...

 

How'd that thing get out of the Smithsonian and end up at your house!?

 

Amen! I got them when I deserved them, and I don't see myself as especially screwed up (at least because of that)…

Looking back on all the ones I got, it made me who I am today. Had it not been for them, no telling how I would have turned out

He'll giggle at anything like that. The other day the boss asked me what parts came in and put away and I said, "oh just a couple roller shafts" Damn guy starts giggling. Dammit Mike, shut up!

 

When I hear the word dongle it makes me think of Lt. Dangle

 

I'm in the shop today. I took the jaws out of 3-jaw chuck and clean the garbage out of the scroll and teeth of jaws. Cut up some half inch diameter stock to make some hilti go-no- go guages for checking set depth. It's kind of ridiculous that we even need them (there's other ways defined in procedure), but what gets me the most riled is that some of them get used to hammer the hilti into the concrete. That's why I've made so many over the years. They're not robust enough to use as a setting tool. Talking about hilti drop in concrete anchors.

 

Dongles -- jackshaft -- what the hell are you talking about, this is family friendly around here.

Great news, glad to hear you are all back on the bright side!

 

Everybody has those moments, I can't count the number of 30 second service calls I had over the years.

The best ones were always when the office folks called -- someone who was addressed as Mr. calls me and says "I need you up here right away, this is top priority, we have an electrical issue!"

So I go right up, listen to his BS tirade about how this needs to be fixed right now, when he pauses to take a breath I politely ask him to stand up from his desk for a moment.

Reach under the desk and turn the power strip back on - click...

"There you are sir, that should take care of it for you." (with a smile)
