This is what happens at our state run liquor stores when desirable whiskies show up:

    20220616_094208.jpg

This is 90min before opening for a store that got 40-120 bottles of BT and 6-18 bottles of Blantons.

Since I took this pic, the line has doubled.

Edit: Two other stores within 10 miles got the same allocation and are just as bad.

Lucky you to have Blanton’s at an NC ABC store. Guys at the local store told me last year that they never get it and you have to play the raffle for a chance to buy some.

Real happy I like the stuff that's easier to find these days. Can't beat walking into any old store and grabbing a bottle of Maker's Mark. It ain't fancy but it'll do!

    Spoils of war.

The BTs are from the allocated stores. I drove minorly recklessly from one to the other in time to get a 2nd bottle and spoof the 1-per limit.

Then, I'm browsing my local ABC and the clerk plunks a bottle of Eagle Rare on the shelf right in my face. This *does not happen here*, you understand. I took it right back down.

The Dimple Pinch I've just never tried and want to give a shot.

It’s allocated to urban areas in much higher numbers.

So I think we need to figure out what the absolute best bourbons are that we can reliably find on the shelf at most establishments. And fuck the allocated stuff. Unless I find some of course and then out comes the credit card.

I’ll take 2 eagle rare over a Blantons any day, good scores. Sucks it is the way it is now, it will fade, all the newbs will figure out that there is more than one distillery making good stuff

So as I am slowly building my collection and diving into this further, I see all this talk about state controlled liquor stores and I am just trying to figure out their benefits and draw backs. I am in Jersey where in certain stores I can find whatever I want, but at 20-40% mark up. But I am 10 minutes from the PA border where they have state run stores. Tomorrow I am going to a motorcycle dealership in PA and saw there is a Fine Wine and Good Spirits store on my way. What can I expect checking it out? Less selection of what is deemed "rare" but typically at or close to MSRP? Or are the state run stores jacking the prices up due to demand as well?

By realistic price I've seen in our area, here's the stuff I feel is worth the money and is frequently available enough you don't have to hunt it:

    Under $30:
Evan Williams Bottled in Bond (White Label)
    Old Tub

    Under $50:
    Knob Creek 9
    Four Roses Single Barrel
    Bowman Brothers
    Calumet Farm 8
Elijah Craig Small Batch (can sometimes be found under $30)

    Under $100:
    I.W. Harper 15
    Widow Jane 10

None of the bourbons I'd regularly spend over $100 for are regularly available in our area (Elijah Craig 18, Knob Creek 15), and there are quite a few under-$100s we can't get frequently either that I'd like to see more (Knob 12, Booker's).

    FWIW.

Pros: MSRP pricing. You can get a bottle of Pappy for $150 or Weller 12 for $40...if you can find it.

Cons: You can't find it. Because the pricing is so good, supply and demand fall out of wack and the high-demand stuff disappears immediately. This is a classic example of the economic law that price controls + limited supply = shortages. Keep that in mind the next time some goober talks about price controls for *anything*.

Hop across the border to SC and liquor stores there (not state run) have rare bottles all day long...at secondary market prices, because supply and demand are functioning as they should and driving price up on limited and desirable bottles.

I’m in PA…..99% of stuff is at msrp

You can expect a bunch of the normal offerings at the store, recently Elijah Craig barrel proof and toasted barrel came in stock, should be able to find one

New riff just came in as well
