Once again Nailed It. thats us to a T. but what they are loosing experience. when a whole group stands around a machine thats been down an hour and half and they have not a clue and you walk over and say its this((5 minute fix). that hour and half is 7000 books lost production.

Happening all over the place. That's what happens with new management or poor management. They make poor decisions based on saving on labor. Penny wise, pound foolish.

This is what so many of us don't understand. We have one newer hire that is 26 years old with 3 years parts experience. Aside from him I am the youngest in this department at 59yo. We are 59,59,60,64,65 and the boss is 73 (he has 39 years here as fixed-ops manager, in charge of parts, service, and body shop). Us older folks have a minimum of 35 years experience each. Of course they pay for that experience. Apparently they don't believe that experience is really necessary to be successful so therefore it's not necessary to pay for. The new kid is a nice guy but it's funny to see the look on his face when one of the techs comes to the counter looking for a part on an old Cressida or Celica. He just has a blank look on his face and has to get one of us old fogies to help.

What made it better was our original catalogs in the mid-80s were hand drawn illustrations on microfiche. We just carried multiple sizes of vacuum hose and had the techs cut their own. :annoyed:

    microfiche..
    Wow the good ol days.
Had a parts manager that could recite part numbers for Chrysler off the top of his head.
    Amazing

I liked the books compared to micro.

The last 5 years they never had vac line in stock.
A 5 min job took an hour waiting for hose delivery. All about inventory numbers.
    So we suffered.
We would steal hose from customers cars to fix the one we were working on and then put the new stuff
On the donor car. Had to. Couldn’t waste the time..

Funny. I left my job for a litany of reasons, not least of which was they just didn't usually listen to "the old guy who didn't embrace new ways".

The prevailing opinion on the new guy seems to be, he wanted to do everything different and wouldn't honor the proven "old school ways"...

Seems upper management may just be looking for scapegoats.

    Not me this round.

    But it is funny..

We often "borrowed" parts from used cars to fix customer cars and repaired the used cars later. Sometimes we even asked for used car's permission first.

Good evening folks. I had a company reach out to me 2 weeks ago for an engineering tech position and after an in person interview, sent an offer letter. I'm actually having a hard time deciding if I should take it or not. The pay is a lot better but it's salary-exempt and their health care is much better and cheaper, but their other bennies just suck, no nice way to put it. It's only 14 miles from home vs the 27 to my current job. The don't offer any long term disability and it's a year before you can participate in the IRA. You also need a year of service before getting any PTO. ( yeah, that one really threw me off.) The biggest attraction for me is that I can go back to mechanical design and CAM programming and learn Master Cam. They do custom thermoforming of plastic so lots of one-off tooling design.

In the 90s I had to train everyone to use computers and cds and give up on the books and microfiche.

    Kicking and screaming

They would show me how much faster they could look up a part, like I didn't already know.

I would hold up a book and microfiche and tell them "this costs $300 to make"

Then hold up a cd and say, "this costs 11cents, which do you think our company is going with?"

That was the end of the argument

    Evening Y'all :hattip:

    Currently 98° feels like 112°

Tried working on my Camaro inside my garage today , within no more than 30 minutes my t shirt was soaking wet from sweat . I even was drinking plenty of water and was starting to get light headed

I've got to figure out how to get more airflow inside my garage , Would a pedestal fan work ????
