I do it myself on nearly every vehicle I've ever owned. My last free oil change is coming up. I change mine in my driveway. I have been doing mine every 5,000 miles so I have done some between the free ones.
I recommend the motivX tools and a good drain pan if you intend to do it yourself. As far as keeping records you can enter your own service history on the Toyota owners website and do it in the Toyota app on your smart phone.
With a previous vehicle I entered it in carfax and printed it out for those that were looking to buy it I had a Blackstone oil analysis almost every year and a pile of receipts for most of the work done to it. They were very happy to see that and I really don't think to me seeing only dealership history would impress me any more or less as long as the vehicle is maintained.

If you don't want to go it yourself my suggestion is find a really good independent mechanic. I had one I used for everything I couldn't do on my own for many years that recently retired so I'm going to be looking for someone new also.
I usually ask neighbors who you speak to, co workers and family who they has done well for there cars and go visit some of the shops. You'll know by the way the place looks and seems to be ran if they're good.

People get such a hard on by telling you they do their own oil changes lol. Pro level mechanics all over this forum.

When I moved I posted on my local town forum on Facebook and asked who everyone uses for auto service. You will easily see who people trust and recommend. A Tacoma is not a very complicated vehicle by todays standard and any solid independent shop should be able to fully service it.

I have been using Valvoline stations. Life is so hectic for me it's worth paying someone.

The best way off course is DIY. Better to find a mechanic shop with a good reputation, established yourself as a loyal customer. Give them your oil changes and tune ups, and they in return will provide you with a honest work. Like making a new friendship. once they know you and a good paying customer, I think it will pay off.!

I would stay away from those “Fast lube shops”. Many of the workers there are low pay and young. They are not professional mechanics. You will want to have people that care about you!

Over the years , I established my self with two mechanics. (20+ years each) There is a trusting business friendships. Always got excellent work and advice.

Still using Toyota for the free changes, was just there Tuesday and dropped the truck, logged into work and waited for 2 hours with a free coffee and browsed the lot. Was a carefree experience Tuesday, and had previously done the same with my 2019 Accord. Those oil changes there approx. $45-50 with Honda, not sure what Toyota will charge but if its over $65-70 i'll do it myself.

I have been changing my vehicles oil since when my Dad taught me to drive. I had to also learn how to rotate tires, (bias tires ) change spark plugs replace brakes and brake cylinders. ,the basic stuffs before I could get my drivers license.

Today in the late 60’s , simpler to pay my mechanic , once a year. Sure once a year “I miss eating for two days.” Lol

I wish it was that cheap at the dealer here for an oil change on these v6 tacoma's...on my final toyota care oil change i was quoted it was going to be $87 for the next one. With current inflation, who knows what it could be now.

imma be taking my truck to the dealer to get them oil changes. i get the "fully synthetic" oil change for $79.99+tax while i went to Mavis before and it was $110+tax.
i was going to Mavis due to them being reasonable when i change my wheels and they did not told me to Fuck off like the other tire places. but damn i tough the oil change whit them was gonna be $80 but they just took advantage of me. now i go to the dealer that way i have service records in case i need repairs with the Toyota warranty. if i did not had a service contract i would do it myself for like 40 bucks

    Mine does..5 lug haha

One reason I deal with them. Jiffy Lube did mine a couple of times long ago and it almost felt like a vehicle inspection where they were trying to get more business. I once caught them charging me for 4x4 service after I looked at the receipt (I'm 2WD) and was done.

My friend had her frame done there and had a great experience overall..once she got them aware of the frame program that is

Dealers can screw up too..long ago I had my oil changed on my 79 Mustang at an Acura dealer nearby, for the price they were running the special for it was worth the extra $5. Idiots didn't add any oil and fortunately I caught it before I left..let's just say I think a couple of the employees got a scare when I went back in there.

DIY auto maintenance is great you know it's done right, you learn things along the way, and you save money.

What if there was a DIY approach to medicine, where people performed their own surgeries?

There could be tutorials, and how tos online. Do it right, learn as you go, and save some money in the process.

I go to the stealership until Toyota doesn't care about you coverage runs out. Then I will take it to my personal mechanic down the road who I have had for the past 30 years.

I didn't know that the successful operation of a socket wrench and/or a funnel qualified me as a pro, but ok, I'll take it. But yeah, it's a forum dedicated to car hobbyists. Some people find it fun to pop open the hood and get grease on their tools.

If that's not your bag, cool. But you shouldn't be surprised by the number of people on a car forum who do indeed get a hard on about changing their own oil.

Yup..I did mine all the time, plus my parents' when I lived at home. Back then I could bring the oil to the dump. Now it's not an option so an extra trip..plus the fact that I can't get my truck into my garage at home rules that out during the winter months at least.

    I'll take it, too! lol

Changing the oil on any vehicle I've ever owned is the same concept. Learning "how to" and repeatedly performing the task on different vehicles gave me the confidence to complete the process myself.

Performing the task on base at the Auto Hobby Shop also led me to changing my own brake pads. Conversations with the attendant would transition to other self-help Maintenance (MX)...and of course some encouragement.

So, here's to those who choose to do their own MX!
