Yeah I get it, but those aren't exactly the kind of imports/builds you're gonna find on your average FFL display shelf either. Most anything in the mainstream market is gonna come with a side rail these days.

I don’t think uneducated people are linking people with autism to school/mass shootings. Not even the uneducated politicians who are using firearms as a political spitball would.

I haven’t had the chance to shoot an AK yet, but the AR is probably the most versatile rife in the market in my opinion. Hence its popularity. I own a couple of them. I was always told if you wanted an AK you gotta go with a real Russian made one. Heard of a couple of other good producers but forgot who they were. Was always told to stay away from Chinese knockoffs. Not sure if that’s old school AK’s or new ones or both.

Also you should use the term firearm more, over weapon

Go on Gun Broker and check the prices of the Chinese Poly Tech's and Norinco's. My Maadi is as close to Russian I'll ever get.

And the photo wasn't staged, either! He couldn't eat and hold his gun at the same time, so he put it down in the back of my truck...

Are you allowed to own guns with your condition?

 Yes. It's not a "condition", so please don't call it that. My buddy who is also autistic is an Army combat vet and owns 15 guns.

Seriously? At the very least you could have Googled that question first.

Part of my goal in being on TW is to educate the general populace about autism spectrum disorder; There's a reason it's called a spectrum. Myself and my friends are on the higher functioning end of that spectrum and are borderline normal. None of us have felony convictions, have ever even been arrested, or have ever been committed to a mental institution. An arrest, depending on what it was for, would not outright prevent someone from owning a firearm; However, felony convictions and involuntary committals would.

I have met numerous individuals who have lower-functioning autism who I do not think should own a gun; This is not because I think they are dangerous and/or would go on a mass shooting, but because they simply don't have the attention span for basic gun safety. This is the same reason roughly 50% of people on spectrum do not get driver's licenses.

I not only have a driver's license, but I know how to drive a stick shift!

    :burnrubber:

One of my friends with Aspergers not only owns guns, has a driver's license, and knows how to drive a stick shift, but he has a CDL and drives an 18-wheeler for FedEx!

And on another note, another one of my good friends also has Aspergers. He is not a combat vet, but he is an Army veteran. He owns numerous guns. He is married with four kids, and the youngest of those kids also has Aspergers. His wife is into shooting as well, and the three older kids have also been extensively trained in the safe and proper handling of firearms. The youngest has been taken to an outdoor range numerous times, but hasn't actually fired a gun yet, and hates the sound even when wearing extensive hearing protection. This is totally normal for someone on the spectrum, as we tend to have sensitivity to loud noises.

My friend is working with son in the hopes of getting him to the point of being able to go shooting.

I personally am not wild about the loud noises, especially at an indoor range, but with proper hearing protection it is tolerable for me.

Hence the reason behind my comment. Anyone who has spent any amount of time on this forum will have crossed paths with you by now on some thread or another and is likely familiar with you and your story. Even if that thought had crossed my mind I would have done a quick search first before posting it like that to you. I suppose I found it inappropriate and borderline offensive. It was likely not the posters intent but it came across poorly.

Respectfully disagree. While I found the question inappropriate and as I posted easily enough investigated without any comment necessary in this thread I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they just posted first, thought later. I think an apology is owed at least but a ban might be overkill unless this is not a first offense. If this is a pattern that I'm unaware of then the preceding statement is no longer valid.

I think @PennSilverTaco posts a LOT of good stuff, photos, interesitng threads, etc. I've yet to meet him IRL but would say he's on my short list of forum peeps I want to meet in person. I'm certain he can stand up for himself but want him to know I for one will have his back if crap like this happens.

    Thread jack over.

Neighborhood yard sale next Friday and Saturday. :( I'll have to see what my schedule might look like. I only live about 30 minutes from there so might be able to sneak away. GM show though.... Now the Mopar show next month...:thumbsup:That's a different story!

I figured that just from his posts. I've met a few forum members in person. Did the Philly Cheese steak meet back in February? This winter sometime. Met several of the guys on the Motorcycle thread since I'm more likely to be spotted over there.

Have to see what next Saturday brings and how late in the day he'll be at Carlisle. If I do get out I'll probably take my vintage Honda and give him something cool on 2 wheels to check out.
