What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Heat it some and get some needle nose vice grips and clamp them on there tight!

 

Finally figured out how to correctly secure those shifting keys where they belong. PITA. Reassembled the output shaft, fought the chain and getting that entire assembly into the case (it all has to be in place, shifting forks - everything). Decided to fit test it before sealing it up with FIPG. Sure enough, what do I notice afterward - a c clip staring at me on the tray!

Pulled it apart and everything was fine. The damn thing is the c clip for the shift lever! f-ing rookie mistake lol

EDIT: Well, another rookie mistake. Jumping to conclusions. OCD got the better of me and I HAD to tear everything apart and I do mean everything. Went step by step and confirmed everything was where it was supposed to be.

I then started wondering about the front diff I just finished. Swapped in a manual diff tube (pulled ADD for good) and after checking, there is in fact a snap ring used on the shaft identical to this extra I had left over. Checking my order history, I did order new snap rings for that diff. Now to breathe easy and put the t-case back together. Talk about being able to easily teardown and rebuild lol.

Well, it seems to be time for my second annual tacomaworld check in, I sincerely hope you've all been well. A lot has happened in the meanwhile, I've moved three times. I got a girl and lost a girl, I thought she was THE girl . Got a dog and lost a dog, then got him back , covid, a good few road trips, lots of camping. I'll try and stick to the truck tho.


We're well into the 200's now at 235k miles, and there's really been no drama to report. I've started calling her Lumpy now because of the hail damage. There's about 50k on the lift now and everything's held up great. I've had to grease the bolt on the SPC UCA's once, one was getting creaky. I swapped out the OME 883's for 882's a while ago, the ride was wayyy to stiff even with the bumper and winch. I suppose the OME Dakar's could use a little help though


I was mad enough to try and fit a Thule roof rack on an extended cab first gen. I did it, though the cost to my sanity and wallet were great. The fit kit numbers are #1064 and #1083 if you must know. Pain and torment await any who try to track either of those down in the year of Our Lord 2022 . The rears are for a 6th gen Hilux, the fronts for a dual cab first gen. I may make a thread on this if anyone thinks such a thing would be useful.

I drove to Colorado to visit an old buddy and Toyota nerd. I got to spend a week doing some crazy wheeling with good friends above 10,000 feet, talk about shaky clutch leg lol. I've been scheming to get back ever since. My midwestern a** felt like I was on a different planet . There's about 1,500 miles between these first two pics:


I purchased a Wildernest while I was out there. I've wanted one longer than I've had the truck, and as luck had it someone in my buddies small town was selling theirs. It has been an absolute blast so far and well worth the money.


My friend Trevor welded in some reinforcement plates from Trail Gear recently. Trevor also helped me dig the truck out of cold spring soil with nothing but sticks, at the end (past the end) of a two track in the middle of nowhere. Thanks Trevor.



That about sums it up. I didn't want to make this a thread, but this seems like quite a long post. Let me know if I should move it or something.

 

Give the penetrating oil (Kroil is my go-to) plenty of time to work down in the threads. Patience, grasshopper!

 

Is your tent not waterproof any more?

 

I haven't posted in here in a hot minute, but I did get my truck off jack stands for about 90 minutes today.

Not sure how many accidents I’ve seen that were caused by shitboxes, now if there was an inspection to keep shit drivers off the road…that might have an impact.

Diff drain and refill with Fram synthetic. Was going to do the fuel filter too but it’s too freakin’ hot. 88 degrees and 83% humidity. Air you can wear.

 

Someone say headgaskets heres mine.

 

My ‘04 doesn’t have them but the ball joints were replaced under the recall so who knows…
