Pics of my son's 2014 (with 2021 SR wheels) with 255 85 16 Cooper ST MAXX (left) and my 2021 (with 2018 SR wheels) with 255 85 16 Yokohama Geolander MT 003s.
Mine has 5100s with 885s, his has 5100s with 886s, so his sits higher than mine.
Also, in the pictures it looks like his has more "poke", but that's because he has his fender flares removed right now.

At this point I'm pretty sure the coopers look wider because they are a bit "fuller" (i.e. the % of tread that is "filled" is higher) than the Yokos.

I can't express how much I appreciate the follow-up besides to at least just leave a like. Members like you make this a great place.

This actually puts them much closer that I thought they were. For sure I think you're right with the tread on the Maxx going a longer width of the tire makes it fuller. But it's actually closer than I thought. I think I'm going Geolandars just dur to price at this point...and they do have a mean side profile.

    Again, thanks so much!

Anyone have reports on the Maxxis Bighorn Mt 255/85/16? I'll have my 2022 OR with TRD lift this week and was wondering if I would clear with the bighorns as I can get local.

Has anyone tried fitting the new baja boss 255/85r17? Very interested in what it takes to fit.

It’s about same work as fitting the 35x10.5R17 Kendas.

So definitely a CMC + pinch weld.
I wonder if SPC UCA/ other aftermarket UCA is necessary

Yes, you need an SPC UCA to make it work. You will also needs to adjust the LCAs all the way forward which isn’t great for your bushings but works. You could also use BTF Lower Control Arms when they release. They are suppose to move the LBJ mount 0.75” forward which might be enough to help clear and add caster at the correct location without destroying bushings prematurely. More caster at the UCA equals less clearance. More caster at the LCA equals more clearance.

I finally joined the club! Recently put on the "revolver" style FJ wheels wrapped in 255/80/17 Cooper S/T Maxx's. The wheels are still growing on me. I kind of like the retro look they give the truck. Stock 3rd Gen Off Road suspension, and I get some slight rubbing on the back wheel well during sharp corners and flexing on trails. We'll see if removing the mudflaps and bending some plastic helps. Then maybe some tweaks on the next alignment. Overall, I think it should be easy to avoid cutting anything, especially if I get a lift/suspension upgrade.

So….after wearing out two sets of Cooper ST MAXXs in 255/85R16 which looked awesome, because of the price of fuel lately, I switched to BFG AT K02s in 235/85R16. I measured with a tape and they’re less that a half inch shorter. No noticeable wobbles, but I’m actually getting at least 4.5 mpg better mileage and they actually look pretty damned good. Happy as hell with that change! I have a brand new Cooper if anyone needs a full size spare.

Anyone running Black Rhino wheels with 255/85/16 tire set up? Wheel is Arsenal 16x8 -10 offset. Was reading through the posts but my brain just got confused. I read that I am at the limit by being a 16x8, so I just wanted some reassurance before purchasing tires. Thanks

The wheel width depends on the tires you get. Look on tire rack for the specific tires you want and it will list the wheel width range that is acceptable. The way I see it is if your in that range your not pushing it, they are specifications and the tire companies are not dumb, they used factors of safety. There are a bunch of people running 8.5" wide wheels including I believe the OP without issues.

    Falken at3w in 255 80 17 is 6.5" to 8.5"
Cooper stt maxx in the same size is also 6.5" to 8.5"

Check it out yourself for the size and specific tire you want.

Here's my vehicle with the st Maxx after 1 year.

Honestly, I'm not too happy with their longevity and durability.

Off road performance was definitely upper tier. However, the road noise, weird on road handling, and small tread depth life are some big negatives. Plus, they look weird, and the gas savings are marginal compared to regular sized c rated tires.thumbnail_IMG_7334.jpg thumbnail_image0.jpg

35s are on and I can still fit in the garage with the camper! The ride is noticeably smoother with these being D load compared to E load ST MAXX.

I have a 2020 Tacoma I put it through more mud holes stock than I see most people with nice builds, I am currently on 30” tires and they’ve finally gone out so I was curious cause I’ve seen around that you can fit 255/85/R16 on a stock Tacoma but all threads I find are Trd off roads and pros. Curious if this is true for Sr5? Any help appreciated! Also thoughts on Yokahama Geolandar G003s as a mud tire
