We’re they japanese bicycles? Lol. My last bike was a Specialize mountain bike.

We lived in Japan as a kid. My father was station at Yokohama Air Force base.
When we came back to Hawaii, both my brother and I brought our Japanese bicycles home. Has a kick stand lifting the rear tires off the ground. We were the only ones in the neighborhood with real Japanese bikes. 1958? Like a Tacoma truck , those bicycles went everywhere!

Good read, good lessons and today so, many are trading in vehicles for new which are not even close to be paid off, sometime 3-4 times or more and they always say the same, well they lowered my payment...

I just turned 60 and was able to retire free and clear. But i too started out with pretty much nothing other than good parents who taught me to be self reliant. My first car was a 72 Super Beetle and I can still hear my Dad saying "if you can get it running, you can have it"

I am now a self made millionaire but I still live in the same small frame house I bought in 1992 that we could barely afford back then. If any of the younger folks are reading this thread, the key is learning to be content, living at or below your means, and saving religiously from an early age.

I turned 50 in December 2020 and I decided (in September) to make my first ever new vehicle purchase as a birthday present to me. I have loved the idea of a Tacoma for so long and I decided one day to actually go drive one to see if I even enjoyed the experience. Well...I was hooked.

I bought the truck the next day (this is back when dealers still had inventory!) and I have been in love with it ever since.

She is a 2020 SR5 DCSB in Barcelona red with the black interior and red stitching. I love the look, the utility and the overall feel of this truck and the feeling that comes with owning a truck. I came from an Acura TL SH-AWD (thought I needed it for my career...I did not) and I don't believe I will ever go back.

Ironically, the most consistent comment I get on this truck is "Man, I really love those wheels!" (I am happy that Toyota got them right, straight from the factory. One less thing to consider in the Taco mod rabbit hole...LOL)

I bought new the following vehicles:

1993 Red Isuzu Rodeo/5-Spd (I can't remember how much I paid for it)
1996 Eucalyptus Green Honda Accord Sedan/AT (I can't remember how much I paid for it)
    2003 Honda Pilot EX/DVD/AT ($32K purchased in 2002)
    2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport/AT ($38,803)

That's a smart move! My wife did not get her driver's license until 1996 (She is from England with Scottish roots and did not drive until I brought her to the states)

Most recent used car purchase was the one I traded in for my Tacoma Sport. It was a 2010 Mazda CX-9 with 112K miles and it was $10K in Oct/2018.

*BATs are very expensive! I sat in a Tundra as I was visiting the dealership in Easton, MD and realized I did not need that much truck. The SR5 Tundra I sat in was under $50K which was over my threshold of $40K. Looking back at the time (May 2021) prices aren't what they are like at the moment.

Used trucks should not cost that much. It's crazy what people are willing to pay to get into a Truck right now.

Last time I spent $30K+ on a new vehicle was in 2002. For me to get into a Tacoma under $40K was reasonable...at least in my opinion.

Based on where the market is right now, I'm glad I purchased my TRD Sport in May of 2021.

    *BAT= Big Ass Truck

    Stock, . . .
Just turned 56, picked up a Tentrax RFT, drove to Colorado from PA for a family emergency. Gas mileage peaked at 21, lowest was 15, and I was driving through 30-40 mile an hour wind.

Same exact story, except my first VW was a 1971 van. Been in our house since 1993, turned 60 last week. Get lots of looks on this color and then a double take when they see the old guy driving it.

Wow, we truly are brothers from another mother! And I too had a VW van in my childhood. Dad got an orange and white one with an automatic for my mom to ferry us (and sometimes the entire neighborhood) to and from the movies, ballgames, etc. I actually took my driver's test in that thing!

PS: gorgeous truck brother, I am jealous!

Your truck looks great! What tires/size are you running? I'm considering getting Marvin some new shoes.

Never had a VW growing up , but built a 1971 VW bus for my wife as a 60th birthday present a few years ago. We enjoy driving her around the island when the sun is shining.75AB378E-9DAD-4455-A105-8897EEFB7AD6.jpg

This is the best thread I’ve seen on this forum in a long time. Great stuff! By the way, I’m 60 and on my second Tacoma…loving it every day!
