Why don't people like the push button start?

My Mom’s Plymouth station wagon had a Automatic drive push button ( not electronic) on the dashboard, left side of steering wheel. Push to drive, reverse , etc. 60’s No center or column shifters.

I am surprised when looking at other manufacturers like the new Colorado Z2 is still key to start.
Ford Ranger also have only a key start.
Yes the Toyota lower end Tacomas need key to start.

Everyone has a Remote to unlock the doors . And just about everyone also have a manual key to unlock doors. Guessing the keys will remain for a while? A key fob battery can fail or stop.

Just a thought our Astronaut rockets , is it a push button start? Imagine if they need keys to start? “ Hey who got the keys”. Can always hide one outside?

FA49E779-A72C-4401-B3B1-AF9DA284C697.jpg Did you see the future to start cars? Need either a finger print? Or eye balls? Maybe even voice recognition?

Keyless systems will be the future as well as a cashless society. One day the “ push button start” will become obsolete?

This old guy like the new tricks, the “ push button start button”.

The yellow dots are engineered grade reflective tapes install on all my dials. Use a hole punch. At a quick glance I can see where my dials are. And the settings.

You just push the button twice without your foot on the brake to go IGN on. Easy peasy

Just picked up a MT Bronco with the push button start. Hate it. It also has electronic park brake.

The combination of making sure the vehicle is off, parking brake is on and leaving it in gear is cumbersome to say the least. It also had the auto start stop. The whole system is extremely frustrating.

My Tacoma is the first vehicle I’ve owned with the push button start and I really like it. To each their own I guess.

The real question is why does it matter to you? You have what you like? Then be a happy person and move on.

Sorry to hear the Ford Bronco push button start is a bit more complicated then the Tacomas.
But one bad push button system does not make all the rest bad.

Cars got stolen before all the electronics were added, the 60’s ,70’s and so on. A push button maybe easier to steal, but key system cars gets stolen too.

I did ask why? And that is a good answer. Push button cars are easier to steal.

When you look at the least popular cars that got stolen? They got stolen too!

Not sure the Bronco is more complicated as Toyota doesn’t offer it with a manual transmission. But you asked why people don’t like them and I gave my reason, and it’s the only experience I have with push button.

My Tacoma has a key and I’m grateful for it.

Toyota should have added rear disc brakes on the Tacoma before push to start. The Hilux, and Hilux Surf AKA Toyota trucks all over the world have rear discs.

Mechanical key--easy to use, easy and cheap to make copies, have only had to replace one worn key ignition in 48 years of driving.
Push button start/key fob--batteries die, expensive to have an extra fob.

I have cars with push button and keys and prefer the keys. We are all missing one item here- we are dudes. No pocket books. My gf never takes the fob out of hers and it makes sense. But i cant drive with a fob in my pocket (uncomfortable) so I take it out anyway to start the car. then what do I do with it? cup holder? center console? so sloppy. at least my 2012 BMW with pushbutton start had a slot in the dash. i liked that system. still felt connected to the car, was fun to push to start, and there was a spot for the key. this was an old non- perimeter system so i could still stash a hide a key without a faraday bag.

The BMW also recharged the key when inserted. no dead batteries there.

sure a CR2032 is easy to find..but why add this kevel of conplexity to sonething so vital?

    keys for me please

Disc brakes, I saw a video of the Toyota reps saying why Toyota did not put disc brake on the rear, they said drums have better braking power , more braking areas. This was just a few months ago. Talking about the 3rd gens.

No mention of the Toyotas around the world Tacoma were using disc brakes in the rear for years and years.

From what I understand the old key days were very easy to hot wire?
Remember the old Datsun cars? My friend lock his key inside, With a screw drive ,I lifted the front door handle , slide the screw driver in touching the locking mechanism, give a lift of the screw driver, got in in faster then with keys.

Sat my fat rear end in it.
Have had many rental cars with push button start. I usually like the convenience of not needing to pull anything out of my pocket to get 8n and go...except for that one morning that I was leaving my hotel and the car wouldn't unlock. No key or lock cylinder in the door, no response to any button pushing on the fob. That wasn't so convenient.

TV shows and movies. The bad guy iis chasing a person, they jump into the cars, fumbling with the keys , half the time so shaking up to put the keys in. Half the time they make it and get away. The other half never had a good ending.

Push to start or using the key? Pros and Cons? Your thoughts?

You ever see a Cyber Truck unveiling?

You can take a rock and bust out the window on any vehicle and get in whith in a few seconds.

I don't give a shit about disc brakes or drum brakes. You have to wonder what Toyota is doing putting drum brakes on a truck in 2022, when other manufactures are building and selling full BEV trucks.

My kids all have push button cars and keep telling me that I should get on board with it, but my new Tacoma has a manual key, and I prefer that, but mostly because I don't like my kids telling me what to do.
