Why don't people like the push button start?

transmission discussion aside, it's not really about control as much as it's about a direct experience, speaking for myself. when my key clicks, i know a circuit is completed, a very direct experience of it completing, no questions if it's completed, no delays. it's just a preference is all. i agree it's the way the world has been futuring since evolution began, but i have a choice. my other car is a self recharging hybrid awd automated everything and two and a half times the power of my Tacoma, i can start it from my phone and it's cool, perfect for the wife & kids but I'm sticking with the basic & direct as much as i can.

 

Direct experience? We are talking about starting a fucking motor, right?

 

Push to to start, is like one of those As Seen on TV products, it's a solution to a problem that never existed. I have never had a single moment of difficulty using a key to start a vehicle..

I have a non Toyota truck with push to start, and proximity key. The no key system does offer a level of convenience, but it isn't necessary. I have no issue unlocking a door, or turning an ignition with a key. The truck will also shift into park when in motion if you open the driver's door. I'm going to go back to a standard key, and gear selector on the column.

 

Not having to fumble around in your pockets with your arms full just to unlock the the truck, makes keyless entry alone worth it.

 

My wife has had 30 years and 4 different manuals to learn on if she wanted to. Apparently it's not important to her. Now myself, I could not tolerate having a vehicle of any kind around that I could not operate.

It would drive me crazy. Crazier. Whatever!

Back on subject, keys. My wife leases a new ford edge every 2 years, it always has the most advanced electronic crap available.
When I sit in it and look around I just can't help but think: "Look at all this shit that's going to break, and I have zero chance of fixing any of it."

So yeah, manual transmissions and old fashioned keys, please. Less shit that going to break.

You should look for a 2015 regular cab base model. Keys, manual windows, manual door locks, and a 2.7l with a 5MT

 

It’s a love-hate for me.

Pros:
-it’s convenient to not have to pull keys out.

-it’s quick.

Cons:
- must put foot on brake to start, so you almost have to be in the drivers seat to start truck.

-Remote start sucks. Truck shuts off when you open door, and you must restart.

-Easier to steal

As FL_TRD Sport noted the Mfg’s are taking auto into the law of diminishing returns.
Is a push button start feature and $600 worth of GPS keys really going to save a boat ton a fuel over the life of any vehicle. Hell No!
Much like cell phones in PCs, many appliances; they going to keep his running back for the parts stores in the garage waste our time spend our money. Thank goodness for these forums, YouTube and rednecks, mechanics, farmers etc.

 

I dont give a shit one way or the other! It's of no consequence to me, if its a push button fine, if its a key fine, but I would not pay $5 more for it.

It seems simplicity is your argument, if you ask me we have too many who require simple to drive. I'd say make it a little more complicated to possibly keep some of the dumb asses off the road. I mean if turning a key is really too complicated, do you really need to be behind the wheel?

Now this could be my real opinion, I could be playing devils advocate, or it could be the alcohol talking!

 

I'm a bit of a toss up cause my work truck is Push to Start and I really hated it at first. Now I've gotten used to it so it's not as bad but I still prefer the key.

1) I know exactly what position the key is in just by feeling or looking at it. When I'm listening to the radio with the truck off I have to cycle the push button to get the truck off. With a key, I can just turn it instantly to the desired position. Then, you accidentally have your foot on the brake out of muscle memory and now the truck is started. I often am on the phone when I pull into a site and then I have to shut the truck off and cycle back to On while it disconnects my phone, so I just end up idling so I don't have to interrupt my conversation. Plus, the work truck (nissan) is so slow to respond to the presses and the dash lights up like a christmas tree every time you touch it, I just jump out of the truck and lock the doors cause its easier than finding the off position.

Say you're sitting in the truck while the engine is off having a phone conversation on the bluetooth and it starts to get a bit stuffy, you go to the roll the window down so you press the button to go to ACC mode, now you don't want to kill the battery so there is no way to turn it back to on without fully turning the truck off and disconnecting your conversation. It's actually pretty frustrating.

2) Where are you supposed to put the keys? I always end up just tossing them in the cupholder but then I grab a coffee in the drive through so I chuck them on the seat, then the first corner driving out of the parking lot the keys go flying into the console void.

The only part I like is I can just hop in the truck and start it, don't have to find my keys. However, I always have keys clipped to me anyway which I have to unclip to sit down. I've just never had a problem with keys (other than bending them) so it's a cumbersome solution to a problem I never had.

 

I don't want to drive a manual, but if all vehicles were manual only that wouldn't bother me.

 

I wouldn't mind a manual transfer case. I wouldn't mind manual hubs...

simplicity and convenience are just other paths to a slow death, mon.

 

I think in some European countries the first year or two you are restricted and can ONLY drive a manual transmission... those cats are on to something over there. Recently some idiots in a moving truck got into a kerfuffle and one of them killed the driver but he didn't get away because he couldn't figure out how to drive the manual moving truck...

But I would never own one of the push-button-start-me-up-trucks or anything else. Just another potential fault in the system. Seems like they are easier to steal too.

 

I recently had my 2017 rear ended, totaled and suddenly became in the market for a 2022 and had to rent.... Well luck would have it, it's the worst time every to need a new tacoma, or to rent a car. Long story short I waited 4 months and never got an allocation on a OR Premium in Lunar rock, but I found a Lunar Rock OR with tech package in another state. I had the chance to get a trail edition a month before but ended up declining because it didn't have push start. Like you I never want to go without it again. I drive a lot for work and not having to get my keys out is hands down one of my favorite features.

 

I’ve read about the car jacking and kidnappings going on around us and push button start makes it very convenient for them.
Think about it like this if your wife or daughter or any family member is getting in the car all the thieves or kidnappers have to do is catch them getting in and run up behind shove them over and jump in and push the button and gone. You know you have the fob either in your pocket or Purse so no need for them to get the keys just push the button. Not a push button hater just sayin
