I dont think any banning is due. Good argument is never a bad thing, just when it gets persoanl, and name calling, and attacks begin to be made.

911 is a flat six. 912 and 356 had flat four. 944 had an I4, IIRC. I am refusing to list the 924 an 914 on principle.

actually. the main thing "limiting" or determining the rating of your vehicles towing capacity usually is not the power/ torque or otherwise of your engine. Your towing capacity is rated by how much your vehicle can safely stop. those two qualities are determined by your brakes but more importantly the weight of your vehicle. i know my truck can pull much more than it is rated for...but stopping it is another issue entirely. that's my two cents on the topic

"Flat" or "v" or "inline" dont have much to do with towing or being high performance/sport , any of those given styles have made either sport or truck motors .
On a truck motor like a pickup , often the piston stroke is long , while a sports car stroke will be shorter. That plays into the rpm range too.
At the most opposite ends is the sport bike and the diesel engine for towing. sport bike going 14k rpm and only goes up and down a short distance , where the diesel is a very long stroke , best tourque around around 1500 rpm +/-.
The above stuff might be among the big contributers as to what an engine tows, but it alone isnt going to determine tow capacity.

true....I was merely pointing out that you may be able to pull more than your trucks towing capacity but be prepared to stop it...that is where a real problem may lie.

I've been on forums for 10+ years and one thing I've learned is never to argue with a stubborn Canadian. Its pointless.

JMO, I wouldn't tow 7000lbs with my 6cyl. The v6 only weighs 3850lbs dry. Anyone viewing this thread that gets convinced they should tow 7000lb with a 4cyl on the interstate deserves the blown rig they'll end up with.

While you may be right sometimes, I dont think its fair to judge everyone (like myself) because some canadians are idiots. Lots of them out there, just have to filter through them lol. Anyways, I love this site and one thing I noticed is how well Americans, Canadians and others are so quick to help out with any problem

I don't care so much about who is an idiot or not, but in terms of towing knowledge, I'm a self confessed ignoramus.

I have a 2010 Tacoma 4 cyl, no tow package. I've installed a hitch and now need to install a brake controller and wiring for lights. I'll be towing a 2000 lb trailer, well within the 3500 lb rating. I don't have a clue about how to hook up the brake controller and other wiring. I figured I'd order what I need and see if I can do it myself, then hire an expert If I'm not sure.

But what do I buy? Husky? Navigator? Voyager? And what wiring package to go along with it?

DanT: Maybe your local laws require use of brake controller, but a 2000 lb trailer wouldnt require one. Better to err on the side of caution, though, if you can afford one.

Sorry to bring up this older thread, but I am looking at a 13ft (16'overall)Camplite travel trailer, which is listed at 1800lbs dry. Add water, fuel, bikes, equipment, supplies, etc and the overall weight should bump up to around 2500lbs. Unlike the 7000lb guy, I prefer to be below the factory recommendations. I have towed for years and with bigger trucks, and the last rig I had a 10,000lb factory rating, and I towed a 6500lb 25' trailer and although it was fine, I would not want to go much larger for safety reasons. I know I am below the factory rating of 3500lbs, but my question is will this be too much of a strain on the truck for a across country trip? I have a frame mounted hitch installed on the truck, with a standard 4 wire plug. My questions are,
    • do I need a larger altenator, for the trailer's needs?
    • can I just use a 4 to 7 plug adapter, or do I need to do what? Trailer has a 7 pin connertor.
    • there are no brakes on the trailer. Do I need a brake controller, and if so, are the 4cyl pre wired for one?
THe rear spring TSB is done, any other recommendations to get the 4cyl Prerunner tow ready? Thanks for the help and suggestions...

Any ideas from anyone who has towed close to the max. rating with a Prerunner 4 cyl 5 spd on a regular basis?
Also, has anyone out there upgraded the alternator for any reason on the 4 cyl? I think it may be a good idea to help power up the "house batteries" on the trailer on the go- but this trailer manufacture claims their trailers can be towed by a number of "normal" vehicles like mini vans, etc. even going so far as to highlight a mini cooper towing a trailer of their's on their web page. Any ideas anyone?
