That very well could happen again, but I doubt it will be to the same extent.

In 2008, there wasn't a shortage of new vehicles, so they had inventory on the lot they had to move.

With this chip and other parts shortages, they're scheduling builds for vehicles when the parts become available.

So if the demand for trucks goes down because of gas prices, they'll likely just not schedule as many to be built and build more Corollas to prevent having extra inventory on the lots that's not selling and using parts that are hard to come by to build vehicles that aren't selling when they could be building something that will sell.

Then with the trucks being hard to come by still, the prices probably won't drop all that much.

I mean, that's what I would do if I were running a car manufacturer.

By the way, when I bought my 2019 TRD Sport, I paid $38,000 Out The Door. Of course, just over $3000 of that was CA Sales tax! I have put several thousand dollars into it, with the biggest being the fully customized interior at just over $2000. But I was recently offered $45,000 for it and it has 48,000 miles on it. The problem with that is that there is nothing out there to BUY, if I was to sell it, but man, that was hard to turn down!

January to March of 2021 was the sweet spot, at least around here. You could still get $3k off sticker and they were already paying stupid high prices for trade ins.

Bought my 2020 TRD OR DCSB 4x4 in April of 2020, got almost $5k off PLUS 0% for 60 months, still paying on it (why not with no interest) and it is worth more than I paid new, only 20k miles on it now.

They sure won't be happy with intrest rates.

People are complaining about the prices of car rentals. The rental companies probably had to pay more to obtain their fleet over the past two years.

Bought my 2021 Sport in May of 2021 for $3,700 under MSRP. Never had a vehicle appreciate before. Weird times. IMO dealers are going to be in a different position on trucks and SUVs soon if interest rates and gas prices stay where they are.

$0.00 the dealer here sells at Msrp, total out the door price is posted right on the website. You like it, walk in and buy it, no haggling. They sell themselves, the salesmen are only needed for test drives if you need one and paperwork.

Ha we just sold our 2nd place back in August of last year. And those yupster transplants who paid $50k over asking thought we were crazy for selling it when we did.

Maybe I'll offer to buy it back from them in about 3 years time haha

I don't know about that.... Being from Fun City, a lot of my friends have simply left the City to live in the country, since they can work from home. As soon as the state government allowed in-person showings in the summer of 2020, I was getting cold calls from realtors who wanted to know if I was interested in selling... I flat out told them "NO!"

Pre-pandemic, I'd agree with you.... but now with this Work-from-home, if your home in the country has solid internet from the cable / phone company, the price(s) may not come down as quickly as you think.

I've had a farmhouse with acreage since the late 90's, and I've NEVER seen such low inventory and high prices...

They were doing this before the Covid/chip shortage market started? And people actually shopped there?!?!?

Never in my life would I have expected to pay MSRP for a vehicle until this market happened.

Yes and paying MSRP is no big deal to me. They need to make money and our location doesn’t really help the situation. If I went to the mainland US and got one for $2500 under MSRP and then paid $4000 to ship it here, what’s the point? Got my 21 SR for 35,147 out the door. The used car lot had a 2017 SR with a 3” spacer and 285’s with 63k miles on it for $38,995. The dealer at msrp is the best deal for Toyotas here. The same “used lot” had lots of 21’s and 22’s. Most have spacers and 285’s and they run about $48k-$50k. Here’s a “beast”. It’s on sale, marked down from $63k.

Everybody’s situation is different and can’t do much about it. Especially now. Toyota’s have always been really popular and sell themselves here.

I didn't catch that you were in Hawaii before, so that makes a little more sense. But damn that sucks! I even looked into that and found an article that appears to be from '98 where they were marking stuff up over MSRP as much as $9k!

But it doesn't sound like they're adding that markup because the vehicles cost them more to get from the manufacturer, it is other business operating costs that are higher for them (workmans comp and stuff like that) vs mainland.

So Hawaii has been dealing with what the mainland is dealing with now for years. And it looks like this current market has made it even worse.

    I feel for you man!

The Ford, Chevy and Ram dealers tack on about $6k plus for dealer mark up. But if you watch the market and pricing, sales and such, you can go under msrp and sometimes they offer invoice. I think we’ll see a little shift here soon because of the gas prices. The Toyota Dealer doesn’t give two shits, it is what it is and they aren’t budging.

Yea bud I wasn't serious about buying the house back lol. While I do think we're looking down the barrel of some serious inflationary issues we haven't seen since the 1970-1980's, I'm cautiously optimistic we won't see another market crash like 2008.

We pulled our money out of the place simply due to wanting to eliminate the mortgage and wanting to buy a piece of country property like you did.
