Y'all crack me up bashing these beers. They have their place. After brewing for 14 years the only beer that I can't stand is beer that is flawed in the brewing or fermentation/handling process. PBR is clean. Flawed beers that I avoid are:

Bud Light: DMS/cabbage flavor
Heineken: Acetaldehyde/green apple
Yeungling: Isoamyl Acetate/banana
Green/clear bottles that are in the light are usually skunked/mercaptan

Learn your flaws and avoid flawed beer. Anything else is just pure preference. Oh, anything that causes you a headache is flawed with fusel alcohol--fermented too hot. All the really cheapo beers are high percentages of corn syrup instead of malted barley. Cheap because the ingredients are cheap but if you enjoy them then rock on.

I was a kid when that came out and had a couple cans of it kept as a novelty. I would have like to have tried it.

One other thing I wanted to add about flaws is that they are usually from rushing the beer off the yeast. The yeast cleans many off-flavors away if the beer is allowed to age on it for awhile. The reason it is rushed is profit. Faster into packaging means more production. If the consumer accepts the flaws it eventually is considered a signature flavor of the beer. Rolling Rock was DMS/creamed corn flavor.

My body absolutely rejects Yeungling. It tastes OK to me but I will belch banana for 12hrs after drinking it.

I avoid Coors Light and Bud Light because they are too sweet for my palate.

I can drink half a bottle on Bombay Sapphire no worries, but a six pack of Yuengling, and I get a wicked hangover. I can't explain it, but your words shed some light on it.

I love porters, but they're unicorns in today's beer market.
My go-to mass market domestic beer is Miller Lite.
While it's a mass market beer, I do like many of the Sam offerings.

True, most beverages have their place. I miss homebrewing. When I lived in Vermont I also had a garden and my best beer ever was an American Pilsner that I added fresh raspberries to from our property. It was very clean and refreshing. Not overdone on the raspberry. Brewing is a fun hobby.

The biggest thing I wanted to get across is DON'T BE A BEER SNOB! Try different stuff. I turned my nose up at sours until I actually tried one and found it was awesome. I have brewed every color of beer you can imagine and I will buy a bulk pack of ALL when I'm not brewing to pound after mowing or when floating the river.

You will find brewers that work for your palate. I think Founders brews some solid stuff. I really like the Solid Gold lager. It has hop flavor in a gold lager.Also Cigar City. I toured their brewery in Tampa. When I told them I was a brewer the guy giving the tour got excited, we started talking about beer and brewing and he said "hey you gotta try this one!" took me back in the coolers and started force feeding me beers. Got me drunk lol.

Yep, absolutely fantastic hobby that will change how you think about beer.

I can definitely throw down a 30 rack of the white can Genesse in the summer. Cream Ale occasionally... Not sure what the price is this year, but I remember it was $18 for a 30 rack last year...

 

When was in high school I remember my friends’s dad would make a road trip to Colorado every few weeks to bring back the much coveted “banquet beer” in those shorty little bottles.

One day the Alabama sharia liquor police pulled him over and gave him a huge ticket for bringing in alcohol from out of state without paying the Lord’s tax.

I think he’s the only person I know that got busted for bringing booze in from out of state, but it could have something to do with the fact that his pick up truck was literally loaded up with dozens of cases of the shit.

 

Lol. I lived in Alabama for a short time in the late 70's, in a dry county. I remember going on road trips with my dad and uncle to the adjoining county for beer. Loading up the station wagon...

Thanks. I'm a Czech beer geek. Dark-light is a beer mixed at the taps out of light colored and black beer. I brewed it by scaling down recipes of Czech gold and black lager. In Czechoslovakia they order beer by color and alcohol content. Like sitting down at a bar and saying. Give me a 7% gold lager.

That Dark-light beer above is 3.6% alcohol and 96 calories/12oz. Drinks like lite beer but has flavor. It is very poundable and would blow your mind because nothing that light bodied should taste that good.

I don't know of any commercially available beer like that IPLager. It was brewed with a crapton of hops added throughout the boil and fermented at cool temps with lager yeast. Then cold crashed and gelatin added to make it clear. Then transferred to the keg with a sack full of hops in it. It was brewed to prove that hops don't cause haze and that haze is a cause of hoppy beers losing their flavor quickly.

When a hoppy beer has haze the haze holds the hop flavor in suspension. After awhile the haze falls to the bottom of the keg/can/bottle and the hoppiness is gone. By dropping the haze out before dry/keg hopping that beer retained its hoppy flavor. It would smash your face with the hop flavor.
