Alot of speculation here, and everybody is right in their own mind. To take the guess work out of it all, and as a shameless plug for a super well deserving and respected company, whatever tire you decide on, get them from @Discount Tire and purchase the certificates with them. Then when you get another puncture, take it back to them and swap it for a new one. But also air down some and maybe it won't happen as often

This picture doesn’t really do it justice. I didn’t set out to take a picture of the problem “sticks” so let me explain better. We had a dozer come onto the ranch to clear paths. In the process, we removed many small cedar trees. What this does is leave vertical, 2” wide, short trunks. These things are firmly rooted. They are not loose sticks. The photo I have is more roots not what I’m really talking about. I just never took a photo when I was out there. I will see if I can find one better.

also, I love the airing down idea … but hearing mixed messages about whether it helps or hurts with punctures

    thank you for the advice

    That’s definitely fair!

I will say that in my experience the truck handles better in every category once I had these installed and the stock HT Toyo’s removed.

Imagine rolling a fully inflated balloon over a fairly pointy object. It'd pop immediately upon contact. Now imagine rolling a half inflated balloon over a fairly pointy object. The balloon would have some free space to absorb the object and be more flexible before a puncture happens. Apply the same principle to your tires. It obviously only helps to an extent, but it definitely gives you better chances.

Fuck it. I’m getting the Cooper AT3 LTs in E load rating and bumping out to the 265/75/16s. I’m just going to throw rubber at the problem. And I’ll air down to 20PSI, to boot. Problem should be solved.

That’s the tire size I have…IMO it’s the best tire size for the taco. Big enough to get the job done but not so huge that it impacts performance.

12v compressors(not those Walmart inflators) are small, cheap enough, and a plenty. Very much a worthwhile investment.
    For example:
Smittybilt 2780 2.54 CFM Universal Air Compressor , Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004K296N6

Some love ‘em. Some hate ‘em. Regardless, most would agree that they’re tougher than hog snouts. They would be a solid choice for your terrain!

I have them in 265-75-16. Load range E. The Pennsylvania woodlands and farms haven’t popped one yet.

Ah, Texas Hill Country, the home of Texas Holey Rock.

If any of you have ever encountered it, you would know why his tires are getting punctured. I've cut my leg open on a particularly jagged piece of it.

An alternative to a 12V compressor is this one that was recommended here in another thread: https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-D55140-1-Gallon-Trim-Compressor/dp/B000HZJMFM?crid=3HDE9GHIOV1IB&keywords=dewalt+air+compressor&qid=1655825326&sprefix=dewalt+air+compressor%2Caps%2C66&sr=8-5

It draws a small enough amount of power that it runs fine off the bed outlet. It works a little faster to air up. Plus I use it for around the house stuff (e.g. nail gun) and is portable enough to throw in the truck when needed.

Exactly - it’s super sharp limestone. This is what I was saying in an earlier post. The terrain there is a m-fer.

Yes - after I bought it I tested it out and it worked just fine with the engine running and the button set to the 400W setting. I am planning on taking it with me to the 4x4 OBX beach this summer. Last time I used a really small 12V emergency compressor that plugs into the dash and it took soooooo long to air back up. This will work so much better.

Speaking of compressors, I love my dual ARB, it gets the job done and is hidden away in the engine bay.

just my .02 but northern Maine logging roads are notorious for jagged shale especially after being grated...and I've seen people pop all 4 tires and entire convoys go through every spare they had (6 ply truck tires) and have to get a ride out to buy new tires just to get out of the woods, i dont know how it compares to the severity of your terrain but for the exploring I do I wont buy anything but 10 plys

Anyone have thoughts on pros and cons of E load cooper ST max versus AT3?

i havent had the at3 but i just got 50+k out of a set of STTmaxx's and i liked em...i would say they are the more aggressive of the 2, i liked them but i decided to go with K02's and theyre much quiter and have better road manners than the coopers
