If I was a single man, 2nd would be the way to go. 2-10 then out chasin it around. But I like eating dinner as a family and winding down in the evenings with my wife. 3rd is a no way no how.

When I worked shifts other than day hours I preferred the 2000-0600 shift. Felt I was able to get more done on midnight shift, second shift by the time rolled out of bed it didn't feel much like starting on anything because I'd have to be leaving for work in 3-4 hours.

The only way I could handle starting in the afternoon was sleep like it was day shift get up with enough time to get some coffee and get to the job site .

Eat something at break about 3 hours later.

Always hated swings (2nd shift). You captured my feelings exactly. Plus 2nd shift is the absolute worst for family time.

    What about 24 hr shift?????
It takes some getting used to 8-5 regular work and task at station plus training and calls. After 5 down time and still responding to calls all night till 0800. Then off for 2 days

How often do you pull this shift ?

I could kinda compare it to the start up to a new line .

The first 24 to 48 hours can be so very interesting if your the crew leader who did the install of the machinery.

Always some bugs to work out.

Second shift was the most miserable, crippling, depressing experience in my life. Great if closing bars is your thing I guess...

I worked nights for 10 years -- the actual working wasn't bad, even offered some advantages, the problem was the rest of the world.

People thought nothing of calling, needing a ride to pick a car up at the garage for example, they would always say "I knew you would be home -- you work nights!" :annoyed:

Just once I should have called them at 2am... :laser:

24's would be so tough because even if you get a slow few hours you don't really get any good rest knowing in the back of your head you've got to jump up and hit it.

We work "12's" that end up being 14 hour days fairly regularly in support of some of these missions that never go according to schedule. The work isnt hard but you've got to be in the right spot with the right equipment ready to roll.

I'm gigging em today, putting a flat spot on em enjoying the scenery.

Re: Poll. Really don't care. The navy had enough messed up schedules that I learned to get used to almost anything; our typical at-sea routine was 7 on/5 off, 5 on/7 off. So twelve hours/day actually on-watch, then when you throw eating, washing, and paperwork in to the mix, usually a 14-15 hour day. Longest stretch was, IIRC, 73 days straight.
