Keep getting flats on stock tires

i also went down a size so that might have something to do with the better manners...but the coopers are definitely one of the most aggressive "AT'S"

 

Good grief, you’re not kidding! There’s a backcountry mine road I occasionally drive on and it has a lot of iron junk on it, making for some nail punctures now and then. I break a sweat, grunt and swear a lot while trying to plug my E KO2’s. It’s so much easier to do that on my wife’s car with street tires that she thinks I’m exaggerating when I do mine.

 

ST Max is essentially in between an AT and MT. It typically weighs more than other choices out there. AT3 is less aggressive, but better on road. Considering you're not having trouble making it through the terrain on stocks (when they don't blow), the "need" for the most aggressive tread probably isn't the most important factor for you. Its kinda just preference, and what you want from the tire. Price and availability are important factors for me. Neither do great if you can't find a replacement local in that size within a couple days, at a reasonable price.

 

It would be better, but is it enough to stop the flat tires?????

 

I picked up two flats at once on the highway in my wife's 4Runner with E load winter tires. Even on the side of the road at -30 I was sweating getting a plug in. E load and cold tires is like a final boss. Should have just called a tow truck.

On my property it's the shallow cedar tree roots that have punctured my tires twice. They poke out of the ground at the perfect puncturing angle and if not brittle by age they go through like butter

 

All I know is my KO2's took on the rusted remains of some kind of structure (that had flattened two tires on both of the rigs ahead of me) and chuckled.

Granted, one tire did have a nice rust mark left on the side wall, but nothing compromising to the carcass or tread.

The other trucks both Wrangler Kevlar reinforced tires on them.

 

So… I may be having the same issue… what tires do you run?

 

I bought the Firestone Destination X/T in 245/75-16 - E-load and weighs 39 lbs.

I saved the Destination LE2 tires it came with and the sidewalls are flimsier than the summer/sport tires I put on my car.

 

I have E Load KO2’s on my 08 and have yet to puncture one of them. If tire durability is your main goal then go with the 10 ply model of your choice.

 

I am beginning to believe that this is the only way to go.

They are thick- very resistant to sharp stuff. Flats or slow leaks from small metal items like nails are hard to avoid with any tire.

 

Yeah, can’t go wrong with those on rough sharp stuff- Ive only gotten a nail and some screws beat them, but plugging them was all it took to fix and I didn’t even take them off the truck. Also never a blowout over the 20+ years I’ve been using BFG KO’s.

 

…should we tell him about our sucky gas mileage while using them?

 

Nails, screw drivers, metal pieces, sharp rocks, etc, We all do get flats.
I drive on a farm road every day. People that visit here with factory mud/ snow tires 4x4s, do get more flats.

I have being running BFGs for over 30 years, dependable. The KO2s with load range E , I feel even more comfortable then the load range C.

Getting a true off road tires I am sure will be a big improvement. With the minimum of load range C.

Years ago my wife Subaru came had the wrangler A/T , two flats (side wall cuts) farm road. . Never again Wrangler.
Later I learn they had many problems with that tire. Goodyear completely re-design the whole tire. But lost me as a customer forever.

 

Honestly, I didn’t notice a drastic change in fuel efficiency. My 08 is lifted 2/1.5 with 10 plys and I’m squeezing a solid 16ish city MPG out of a clapped out 14 year old truck.




I’m pretty heavy on the gas too.

 

Respectfully disagree all you want, but you can't argue with physics. When you are talking about 13 lbs of rubber that is spread out across the entire surface of the tire. It doesn't add a lot of thickness.
