Any issues with rabbits

We have rabbits, and something that like to burrow in the garden. Never seen the animal digging but it leaves a mess.

 

No never had issues with rabbits. Our big issues is squirrels they eat the our fruit like crazy…

 

Late to the party but this is our garden that I built a couple years back. It was a sloppy mess for a long time but has been much easier to maintain since switching to raised beds.

 

Yep. Squirrels and deer are destroyers.

 

The squirrels like Cherry tomatoes, here. I guessing because it's small.

The neighbor tried cage the garden, plus raising the garden boxes. Nothing seems to work. The critters just dig their way under the garden.

So the neighbor gave up, and started making the garden bigger. Enough for everyone, plus the wife appetite for tomatoes got bigger.

 

I have fully loaded Goosberry plants. Little fookers are eating GREEN gooseberries. Wow.

 

Nothing messes with my hops plants.

Deer isn't an issue anymore in this area. All the woods are getting eliminated for houses. The city are trapping the deer and relocating to the reservation where there's over 50 acres of woods for them to roam around away from humans.

 

I had to Google Gooseberry. Are they similar to grapes?

 

Oh man, they are thick here because they know people only hunt them in the hills. They LOVE LOVE LOVE young fruit tree leaves at head height so the can look out and eat. They eat some evergreens that you would not think edible.........and they eat a lot.

Not really. Gooseberry is basically the same as currant, but with spines. I have red gooseberries.

 

The city/town put a banned on hunting deer because they were getting scarce. Now that the population is back up, hunting season re open again. Most hunters only kill the male adults.

From a Google search, Currant look more like Grapes, and grow like Grapes. It also mentioned they are from different famiies.

Currants was banned in the US in 1911 and lifted in 2003.

 

Yeah, ribes (currants, gooseberries) are NOT related to grapes at all. They don't grow like grapes either. That comes from the labeling "Zante Currants" by SunMaid and others. Zante are indeed just small grapes. Stupid use of the English language IMHO.

Currants are still restricted in some states as they can host a fungus that attacks very specific white pine trees.

The gooseberry bushes are medium small, but vigorous as hell with nasty spines.

 

Everything you wrote is exactly what I read on Google.

It's weird how plants look alike but come from different families. It a learning experience for me.

50 acres is not much for deer, sounds like the city is full of crap

 

I think i read something about deer will live and die in 2 square miles area from where they were born. But ive had a few bucks 3+ miles on different cameras. One was shot maybe 3 miles from where i had a game camera

 

I said the same thing but He replied the 50+ acres belong to the city the rest belong to the surrounding cities/town. Instead of guessing the acres without looking he reply 50+, instead of over guessing.

The city has a relocating program for wildlife along with the surrounding cities/town. I saw them trying to catch a deer with a wildlife noose. Let just say that the deer was winning.

 

I've heard the same. Bucks seem to roam more, especially during that special time of year!

I guess my point was if the city is trapping and relocating a lot of deer to 50-100 acres, that's not much land to support a decent size herd of deer. And unless it's high fenced, they probably will relocate themselves again.

 

The only high fence area is around the water plant. If you combine all the acres from all the surrounding cities/towns there's probably 1000 acres. This city has the smallest area.

The reservation area is the best place to put the deer for their safety and the public. The city has no other choice, No place to relocate them.
