There is a lot of grumbling about the new Mercedes solution of the floor stays. (the small rods strengthening the floor in front of the rear wheels). Several team principals were quoted saying Mercedes must have had advance notice of the technical directive to have them ready at the Canada race. I remember seeing them several times, but I read they didn't use them in quali or the race.
Are any if the other teams running these? Did Merc use them in the race?

Mercedes had to have prior knowledge of the admissibility of a second floor stay in order to have one built and ready to go on the car the same day as the FIA technical directive

Nah, Mercedes’ have been trying to fix the porpoising for ages, I’m sure the second stay idea was formulated around the same time as the initial stay design.

2 has to be better than one, right?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if an engineer had already come up with a second stay design. That's what those guys are paid to do and enjoy doing - coming up with ideas to solve problems. If one of them had already thought up a way to do it with parts on hand it would be a quick and simple modification.

Also just to clarify, all of the teams have been using stays to help with porpoising. It’s just that Mercedes’ trialed using a second stay in front of the first.

Unless I understood it wrong The directive wasn’t a green light to build something like a regulation, it was created to make sure the teams minimize the porpoising with the cars are as they are for the safety of the drivers.

EDIT: I was wrong see post below…

It's a bit messy since a technical directive isn't supposed to be used the way the FIA is trying. It did however authorize the use of a second floor stay.

    Ooooooh, I see.

In which case I’m sure Mercedes told the FIA how to fix the problem and probably typed up the directive for them :stirthepot::rofl:

Horner, Safnauer, and Binotto were quoted as saying they would not have been able to apply the solution the same day as the directive.

More than one team principal also said they would protest the result if they ran it in quali or the race.

Thanks, I didn't understand this is a 2nd additional stay on each side.

That's all assuming that an engineer hadn't already come up with the idea though. Mercedes has been looking at ways to reduce porpoising for months now, it's logical that even if that option wasn't permitted someone on the team had considered it and how they would rig it if able.

All those teams were ready to issue protests and threats against the Merc's side pods too, until the car proved not to be a runaway success. Then all of that noise quieted right down.

    It's all competitive theater.

Only if they’re competitive. Otherwise it's just theater. ;)

SBJ reported that “ESPN’s deal gives the media company flexibility to put a small, but undetermined number of races exclusively on its ESPN+ streaming service. Most races will be carried on linear television, either ABC or ESPN.”

Sorry guys, you can't watch the full season on the same channel. - ESPN

    This is dumb

I prefer to miss races than to personally pay ESPN any more money.
