Diff oil wt for locking rear differential?

    Hello all,
    Does anyone have a Definitive answer to the type of differential oil I need for my 2015 Taco with locking rear diff? I’ve gotten two answers from auto parts stores. One said 75-85 the other 75-90.

    OEM fluid is 75-85 but that's not a common weight so almost everyone just uses 75-90.

    Pretty sure it's 3.1 quarts. Buy 4 quarts and just fill it until it trickles out of the fill plug, make sure the truck is level though.

    whatever tickles your fancy, not much difference between those two. No special additive needed for the e-locker, although the LSD additive won't hurt anything if you do use oil with it in there.

    I can definitively tell you that I’ve run 80w-90 conventional oil in mine for over 6 years now without issues this far.

    But when in doubt, refer to the owners manual.
    Good luck find what ever it is they recommend

    Rear differential carrier assembly:
    2WD: 3.26 to 3.36 litters
    (3.45 to 3.55 US qts, 2.87 to 2.95 lmp. qts)
    Pre, 4WD: 2.75 to 2.85 litters
    (2.91 to 3.01 US qts, 2.42 to 2.50 lmp. qts)


    FWIW, I never got 3 quarts in mine. It started pouring out at the fill hole about 2.5 qts or so.

    Are you confusing e-locker for LSD? They are not the same thing.

    Per the owners manual on my 07 Tacoma.

    API GL-5
    Front: SAE 75-90
    Rear: above -18C ( 0F) SAE 90
    below -18C ( 0F) SAE 80 or SAE 80w - 90

    LSD additive is not required but will not harm it either if it has an e-locker.

    FYI if your are going to do the change I would also recommend to change out the diff breather vent.

    All E-locker trucks are open diff.
    All 2009+ trucks are open diff.

    I wouldn’t over complicate it.
    Pick one, pour it in, drive it.
