Picked up this project this morning.

2004 ish, fuel injected Kohler Command. 900 hours on the unit.

Engine semi locked up.

This is the 1 st Kohler I've come across that had internal issues out of 15 projects. I hope it's a simple fix, but have my doubts.

Can wiggle the crank left and right 1/4". Can feel the pistons moving when trying to move the crank.

Presently pulling the engine so I got room to work.

Regardless, if this engine is toast, a HF engine will be slapped in there.

The chassis is in decent shape.

Btw, what engineering brain trust puts an engine ECU under the chassis?!

Definitely something come loose inside. Hope its fixable. This is a very expensive engine for someone to not take care of the maintenance.

My hypothesis is that the left hydro pump had pinhole leak in the pump body gasket. The motor fan just brought all that dust and oil into the fins.

The mouse damage is just from the thing sitting for a couple years.

 

2nd driest Spring on record in the last 128 years.

I have atleast 11 tubs out, gotta place sticks into the water so the birds have the means of egress. Some of the Live oaks are starting to turn leaves, so I will be watering them best I can. I have a friend gonna get me some more of those totes from his work, another 4 totes.

Popped the flywheel off. Magnets completely gone and ground up against the rectifier.

I don't know if I've ever seen a rectifier that was this bad. I metered it out. It's open, so it's shot.

What a hot mess!

I'm a little annoyed with myself.

Yes, this is a common problem with these older Kohler engines, but the rest of the engines are very durable .

I had an extra Kohler Command FW, so I epoxied in the magnets so I could have a spare FW.

If course this flywheel is totally different. It has a tone ring that feeds data to ECU.

A used FW is $200 for this style!

Dammit! The price I pay to be prepared!

 

Well, I'm tired of having ticks and chiggers everywhere around the house. Ordered stuff to make a sprayer I can mount behind one of the Cubs. I got a $180 Fimco sprayer with 2.4gpm pump from Cabela's and ordered a boomless spray nozzle from Amazon.

I remembered I had $92 in Cabela's points on a CC I haven't used in years and I got 10% off and free shipping so it ended up being $82 shipped. The nozzle was also free via my Amazon CC points.

This will be loaded up with Bifen XTS which I have found to be a great pesticide. I'll fab a carrier to go in one of the 2" receiver hitches on one of the 3 Cubs that has them--probably the 3225's 3-pt hitch adapter. Any hints/trick/tips are greatly welcomed.

 

Those boomless nozzles are nice, just be careful with the wind.

 

Had to find the photos, I had a 3 pt. sprayer a few years ago and used it a few times before selling it. I put a boomless nozzle on it and it would spray 50'

 

Wow. That must have has some high gpm pump and pressure. I'm hoping to get 10ft or so rigged like this. Pic from the Amazon reviews on the nozzle

Finished the tear down and cleaning .

New head, intake, exhaust and case gaskets.

I was worried the bottom end was shot. No issues except 1 bad head gasket.

Waiting on my stator and flywheel.

Brother in law is doing the magnet repair. Hopefully tomorrow.

 

I'm curious how effective these monitors are?

I've had several machines with the same filter assembly, but they all had a plug in the port where this device lives.

As easy as it is to check the filters on this type, it kind of seems a waste of time and money for this fancy flow monitor .

Please express your thoughts and enlighten me to what I'm missing.

 

If you regularly service the air filter, it isn't necessary. That is there to try to encourage lazy people to service the filter when it is needed.
