Ultragauge/scangauge

Looking into getting one but was curious if anyone is running something different as I have seen other gauge options on Amazon. Open to all options that everyone has.

 

Depends on what you want to monitor but I believe both are pretty good for basic stuff like trans temp, coolant temp, voltage, etc. I have a scangauge I use for fuel mileage, voltage, and coolant temp, I believe the ultragauge is basically the same thing but with a bit more screen real estate.

 

I had one in my 2nd gen, I liked the added info it provided. There was something weird about trying to get it to read transmission temps but i can't remember if it was ever resolved. i had mine mounted like this:

 

I have an Ultra-Gauge. Works well...but for all its neat features it does not display oil pressure. Something I specifically wanted. Now I am not certain if that's a limitation of the gauge itself or if the Taco lacks that specific sensor. Bit of a let-down for me, but live and learn.

 

2nd gens don't have an oil pressure sensor, just a switch that is connected to the light only. I believe the light only turns on when the oil pressure is below 5 psi so it's kinda pointless anyway, by the time it comes on and you pull over damage has likely already been done.

 

Copy that....sort of what I suspected.

I had a scan gauge 2 and it was great, lots of available readouts.

Ultra gauge gets good reviews too. Larger display than the scan gauge 2 and cheaper. Not all ultra gauges models have equivalent readouts so if you are after certain gauges like say transmission temps you need to be sure the model you are buying supports it.

Personally I’d opt for the new scan gauge 3. Comes at a much higher cost however.

 

I have the ultragauge. Bought it in 2017 or 2018. My only real complaint is I've had to replace both the suction cup and the plastic piece that mounts to the suction cup. Im sure the latter broke because it kept falling off my window shield on hot days.

 

I wa also interested in these. Do they actually give you a good estimate on miles to empty. Thats one thing i do like about the modern cars. Like my wifes 21 corolla

 

Yea if you fill up the same way consistently and always fill the tank.
Not sure how the UtraGauge works but the way the ScanGauge 2 works is you tell it what size engine you have and fuel tank size and it estimates MPG in realtime based on a number of engine parameters it reads from OBD, each time you fill up you select fillup on the menu and it goes to a screen with the amount it thinks was used and you change it to how much you actually put in (you have to fill your tank each time or this feature will not work) to calibrate it.
Mine is almost always within 0.5 gal, usually it is within 0.2 if I use the same pump at the same station consistently.

 

Anybody here regret buying the ultragauge for transmission temp? Will be doing a one time 500 mile tow and want to keep an eye on things. Is there a compelling reason to buy the scangauge 2?

 

What about the scangauge 3? I know it just came out but haven't done much research on it just yet.

 

Too much cash for a one off use.

 

I guess it depends on how much room you want it to take up/where you put it. I cant think of a single time mine has personally given me any real regrets.

Only things I would note as slight negatives.
I could not stop looking at it when I first got it, but im a slighty paranoid person and it took me a while to figure out what "normal"is. From there it was just relearn to trust it will all be fine and I can just glance over and see nothing is out of the ordinary.

My other complaint with my ultragauge is with its original mount. I chose the suction cup style, I could never seem to make it stick for more than 4 months at a time. I finally purchased the Stryker engineering mount, that solved all my issues with that

 

+1 for scangauge2. Have mine mounted to the top of my steering column. Showing intake air temp, water temp, trans temp, and instant mpg or horsepower (depending if i want to smile or cry).

 

@Heyyo_Friday Thanks man, that was feedback I'm looking for. Wanted to run this for a couple of weeks to get used to normal. Like you, I'm sure I will look at it more than necessary at first. Working out mounting seems to be the challenge. Think I got a spot for it above the"qi" cubby.

 

Don't mean to thread jack but figured OP might want to know as well-I was thinking about getting one as well for when I start towing occasionally to monitor trans temps and I believe I had heard about them drawing some power when the truck is off (assume its for the memory so it doesn't have to relearn every time). Can anyone speak to how much of an issue this could be/how long it actually takes sitting to draw it down significantly enough to affect starting?

 

FWIW - whatever the milliamp draw is; no effect on starting my Tacoma after sitting 10 days. I doubt that it draws any more than the radio, factory alarm, etc. I also have one on my Tundra, and it sits for weeks at a time.

 

I run a ultragauge blue.
Custom screens. Etc.

Works great. No wires to run.
