I'm looking for advice on how to completely remove old vinyl pinstripe adhesive. I believe the pinstripes have been on for about 12 years and they have started to look pretty weathered. The top layer of silver color came off easily with a 3M eraser wheel but the adhesive is a different story. I've tried 3M auto adhesive remover, heat gun, plastic razor blades, polishing compound and nothing has worked. Any ideas? I see Easy Off oven cleaner pop up online quite a bit to remove stripes but I know it can damage paint and I would like to avoid that. I almost bought some Goof Off pro strength but figured the 3M product was better due to the reviews. Any other things to try before I try wet sanding them off?

Surprised the eraser wheel didn't work. What speed did you use? 3M recommends 2000rpm

Rapid Remover, it's what we sign shops use to get old vinyl glue off. On ebay.

I should get some just to have around. Maybe for wheel weight adhesive removal

Thanks for the replies. I used a cordless drill with 1650RPM max. I have a few other drills so I will check the RPM on those and give it another shot to see if a little more speed will do the trick.

I'll order the Rapid Remover as well. It has plenty of good reviews so hopefully it will work for me.

Post up how it went, I have the exact same issue. The eraser wheel did a good job on most of the pinstriping, but left behind a thin line of the hard crud.

Well unfortunately I didn't have any luck with the Rapid Remover or using a higher speed drill. I'm thinking the only option at this point may be wet sanding.

Did you let the Rapid Remover sit on the adhesive for awhile?

Another option is Isopropyl Alcohol, it may take a little longer to remove adhesives. Goo Gone works to.

My sons truck had old, sun baked glue from where the previous owner had removed the window vent visors. We tried Goof-Off, Wd-40, acetone, and every other household product I could think of and nothing worked. He tried some rubbing alcohol on a rag and it wiped right off. I would have never thought it would do anything but it worked like a charm.

Just like what @AtomAnt said, rubbing alcohol should get that stuff off. Won't be easy but it should work.

I did wet sand a small section using 3000 grit sandpaper and it came off easily but now will need some polishing compound to remove the haze if left behind. Any recommendations for a good polish that can be applied by hand since I don't have a polisher (or experience using one)? I'll get some 90% isopropyl alcohol and give it a try since it's cheap and I would prefer to chemically remove it versus sanding it off.

Try Goo Gone. I’ve used it on lots of stuff. Recently I used glue stick and water bottle to pull a dent out (almost all), then used Goo Gone to get that glue off. Waxed afterwards.

I've tried Goo Gone, Goof Off and isopropyl alcohol in addition to the other things I mentioned in the first post. I discovered the pinstripe was put on before the paint was fully cured and it's permanent. Wet sanding with 3000 grit removes the left over tape & adhesive but I can feel the stripes drop down into the clear coat slightly as I rub my hand across. I'm not sure how to describe it other than to say the pin adhesive melted into the clear coat since it wasn't cured enough (not OEM paint, the entire truck was repainted). I got busy with life but once I get it sanded & polished, I will put another stripe back on to hide the lines.

The 3M rubber decal wheel should get that stuff off easily.

if you stick with the wet sanding method, follow it up with Meguire’s Ultimate Compound, then Ultimate Polish

Rock sliders, bedliner, intake, turn signal mod, ARB front bumper, All-Pro Off-Road Pre-Runner Rear Bumper, Smittybilt X2O COMP wench (pun intended) W/Synthetic Rope, snorkel, OME 883'S, BILSTEIN 5100'S F/R, air bags, big 4,more to come.
I used acetone and then just waxed and buffed it, took off ALL the adhesive nothing else would touch. I soaked a rag and held on for a bit, the sticker and adhesive boiled and wiped off with a bit of elbow grease. Better than sanding and a bit less damaging if you don't go crazy.
