Is this too much rust if I'm going to be using the truck for a year?

    Hi all,

I'm a new member and I'm looking to buy my first tacoma! I'm looking at today, gonna be keeping it for about a year and using it on some service roads for camping in BC and potentially carrying a dirtbike in the back. The main things I'm worried about are the rusty frame (see pictures) and checking for leaks on head gasket. What would you say is too much rust if I'm going to be using the truck for a year then selling? Anything else I should be looking out for? TIA

Welcome to TW! You may only be driving it for a year but you may have a hard time selling when you’re done with it based on the frame condition. Unless you’re getting a hell of a deal, I’d pass.

Its 10k CAD, won't offer more than 6.5k CAD for it. Do you think at that price it's worth it?

You would need to provide more details. Year, cab size, miles, mods, etc. But frame alone, I would look at the unanimous decision above and ask yourself if you want to risk throwing away 6.5 CAD if it busts. Also, why drive it for only a year and sell it? Does your current vehicle not run? Is it not able to last one more year? Assuming your market is as crazy as ours I would wait and find what you actually want/ would want to keep long term. But that is just my .02 not knowing anything about your situation

It’s your money, just be aware that you might be stuck with it in the end, personally I’d still pass.

Sorry, missed the link. I'd pass. Access cab and the head gasket issues from 05-06 not to mention the rust. I'd wait for the market to drop and put the 10k down on a new one. With crazy prices of these things you'll pay less than if you were to get in to the mess and repairs. Used stuff is absolutely ridiculous right now :/

Reason for the year long timeline is that I'm from the UK and living in BC short term. I only have a year and a half left on my Visa and my current plan is to sell the car next summer then buy a motorbike and then drive down to Argentina. Need something for this summer and winter which is 4x4 and Toyota's are very reliable and have a good following so should be reasonably easy to sell. But I have a tight budget of around 15k CAD in total.

I’d run away and not look back at $10k
    Not even for $5k.

That rust is fearful and I wouldn't trust it, and WAY more than mine of the same age had. I get that Squamish is super humid but that's concerning. My '05 had a leaky head engine gasket and I was quoted $2.5k to fix, since the full block needs to be pulled. If you can, check in Washington state too.

The important parts aren’t even shown.
The frame rails close up and the areas by the frame beside the converters.

Perhaps this is a better option: Frame has minimal rust and low kms, however, it is a rebuilt title but spoken to the seller and he's had the repair done at a garage and has receipts for the work. if I could get him down to 15k CAD for that, this may be ok?

    no way.
I bought an 06 with a bunch of mods for 11500 in 2011. People are high as a kite asking these prices. Especially for a rebuilt title… good luck selling that in a year either

Had a look at it today and the rust was a lot worse than the pictures! The leaf springs were shot too even though in the ad they claimed they had new leaf springs... Walked away without even test driving, thanks for the advice everyone :)
