Smell BS, if they were correct and thought the engine needed to be tore down, they would push hard to do so. Typical extended warranty thievery . Could be a faulty injector leaking down when the truck is shut off. Fuel system is pressurized I believe. So in theory that cylinder may be getting a bit more fuel upon start up, and then levels out once it"s running. If it bothers you swap out the injector. Get OEM replacement.

If he would elaborate on the code it would help us guess less. P11EC is my best guess on what it is. That has popped up on quite a few 2016-2018s and even a few 19's and I've seen one 20. That code is for too much difference in air/fuel ratio between any two cylinders. The reason for that code is a bad valve causing the differences in A/F ratios between cylinders. Considering he says he needs a valve replaced, this code is likely the reason.

Very likely the explanation of "fuel a fraction of a second before the next cylinder" was something lost in translation between what they told him and what he told us. Either that or they didn't quite explain the problem to him, which is very possible too.

Staring at the dash while stuck on the side of the highway isn't going to make you feel any better about the situation.

Just responding to a what-about troll in a deserving fashion. You want me to start posting threads where your glorious 4.0 shit the bed?

3.5 makes more horsepower, but the 3rd gen weighs 500 lbs more. Negates any power increase.

Plenty of 3.5 motors have been failing recently. As they get higher up in mileage, there will be much more failures. Enjoy your truck and don't get so triggered. The 4.0 is proven reliable. 3.5, not so much.

    Exactly my thought.

With the engine options in the Tacoma's, there shouldn't be two cylinders getting fuel at the same time. I would take it to a different mechanic.

OP, I'm sorry this is happening to you. We definitely want to hear what error codes the dealer is pulling.

I apologize for the few 2nd gen whining bitches that show up in every troubleshooting thread. Apparently they're attempting to compensate for something they're lacking. Dick size, horsepower, dated interior.. we're not sure exactly why they do it.

Fuel delivery timing has nothing at all to do with pistons and valves. Is this a Toyota tech who told you this?

If its under warranty then let them fix it and decide later if you want to trade it in. But obtaining the code and finding out what they are doing to the motor before the work is a better idea.

Predator steps, TRD cat-back, lots of orange stickers.
4.sl0w owners crashing the thread, pleb-spec 3rd gen owners thumping their chests about lack of interior chrome, I haven't seen a 3rd Gen Friday thread like this in years hahaha

OP, that sounds a little suspicious. You can't get a true diagnosis from the online truck forum, but I'd suggest having someone else look at it. Even if it's a trusted mechanic and you eat the diag fee, or another dealership. Fueling issue requiring a teardown seems sketchy.
