Does any other truck compare to Tacoma's reliability?

Reliability has sometimes been classified as "how quality changes over time." The difference between quality and reliability is that quality shows how well an object performs its proper function, while reliability shows how well this object maintains its original level of quality over time, through various conditions.

With that being said: unfortunately I never owned a brand new vehicle for this long but I did owned a 97 Toyota Camry that I purchased in 2007 and it was in way better shape than my 10 year tacoma is today, I owned the camry for 3 years with 0 problems. (I really miss that car).

    Tacoma
    2010 140k miles
    0 miles offroad.
    a real mall crawler.

    Radio replaced under warranty.
Brake disks (Warped) replaced under warranty.
Rubber seals (water leak) Replaced under warranty.
Blower fan motor replaced twice under warranty.
    Headlights replaced under warranty.
Carrier bearing replaced (shudder still present)
    Rear leaf replaced under warranty
Rear leaf replaced (OEM are crap)

    The big ones:
    Transmission shudder.
Clear coat on paint went to hell Truck needs to be repainted.

My neighbor has 2010 Silverado 120K miles
0 problems except the paint peeling.

I'm not sure if its hit and miss, but Toyota is NOT the Toyota that it used to be. Nothing is in fact, things are not built to last. I came to the conclusion that cars are good for 10 years, then sooner or later all the problems come..

The previous generation of Ford Ranger was a pretty tough and reliable vehicle especially the 2.3 l 4 cylinder. It was used a lot in the Tough Truck series of competition.

Camrys are better vehicles than Tacomas, even when comparing the 2022 models.

Certain era vehicles seem to be the most reliable. Mid 70's to early 00's seem to be the best and the sweet spot being somewhere in the middle. Which was probably the peak of motor vehicle design, engineering, and production.

Much of the early 2000s stuff pre-2008 crash seems to be pretty reliable. My 07 frontier has been amazing.

Gonna chime in and say GM products are shit. I've worked on GM Dirtymax fleet vehicles and a few of the newer ones teenaged ones (2009+) all had total fuel system replacements numerous times, 2500/3500s costing in the realm of $11,000, a big ass 5500 going in on a $17,000 repair. Wiring sucks and the OEM wiring diagrams are even worse. Often times belts and pulleys on consumer cars are on the back of the engines requiring total removal. Had a friend with a 2015 Sonic have so many problems in her 6 years of owning it that if she hadn't had warranty she would've racked up over $10,000 in repairs on every system aside from AC in her first four years of owning it. She had to pawn off a(n originally) $25,000 CAD car in 6 years for $3,000 after she'd gotten the huge list of repairs needed.

See my quote below. Loved my '92 Mazda B2200, still love the '99 Ranger 3.0L I have sitting. Once I repaired the neglect (blown up ball joints, heater core, pinion seal was C shaped with a chunk blown off completely) it was fantastic for the years it was a daily driver. Left it sitting too long once I bought my long-gone Civic, traded for my Tacoma and then used huge trade value for another Tacoma... almost 10 long years later, poor thing needs a little love now that I'm the one who's let it go too long. There's really something to be said for old, sturdy, reliable, vinyl floor, bench seat, crank window trucks. Happy to have a project if I move back or get it up here though!

I don't like GM, but the gas Silverados 3500sI have driven were very reliable, with a lot of maintenance and being worked very hard, but were kept around in favor of both gas and diesel Fords and Rams that were traded in for other Fords or Rams.

Lots of people like the 5.3 and 6.0.

    Still figuring it out…
88-98 k1500’s with the 5.7L 350. I had a 91 and a 93 in high school and I beat the piss out of them and they never had any issues! Bought my first truck 3 months ago and after all the research, A Tacoma was the only thing close to those trucks I had in the day.

I had a 2016 F150 with the normally aspirated 3.5. I liked it, great gas mileage, good horsepower when it was wound up, quiet and comfortable. Down side was you paid for the soft ride when you loaded it down and the electrics were glitchy. Windshield wipers would decide to come on (intermittent) on their on and the only thing to stop them was to kill the engine and restart it, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt. And every now and then it would start dialing the phone and if you cut it off it redialed over and over until you disconnected the phone from it. Which was hard to do at 70 mph in bumper to bumper traffic. I kept it until it was in the 75,000 mile range, last I heard it was at 300,000 + and they thought the timing chain had jumped a tooth.

There's a tbs for a redesigned wiper switch to fix the intermittent wiper issue. Sounds like you had the touchscreen with sync for the phone, most of the sync issues get fixed by a software updated.

I had an 87 Mazda B2200 that defied whatever I threw at it including 16 Ohio winters and 167000 miles. It was rusted to pieces, but it never ever really let me down. I had a tie rod break but that didn't stop it from getting me home. A coat hanger and a pair of vice grips was all I needed for a temporary fix. The fuel pump started to go. With the bed being so rusty I didn't have to drop the gas tank. I replaced it sitting in what was left of the bed. What finally killed it was a load of rocks I was hauling to landscape my house with. It blew a ring and started smoking. Still ran great as long as that back spark plug was cleaned every week. Wouldn't pass our e-check though. That sucked because I sold it to a guy who didn't live in our e-check zone and had to watch him driving on it on the same roads I did for another year before it finally gave up the ghost. I also remember wondering what would happen if I got into a wreak with the cab mounts and core support rusted away. It also never got stuck in the snow. Good times with that little truck.

I did and it was updated 2 times, but the dealership was one of the shittiest I have ever dealt with so everything they said they did was suspect. First time they replaced all the switchgear in the turn signal under warranty. It kept doing it until I had to slam on the brakes which warped the rotors (had about a thousand pounds of welding wire in the back) and had the supposedly replaced turn signal switch gear slide out from under the front seat still in the box unopened. LMAO They then got more serious about a fix and it may have been fixed after the last visit.

I really liked the truck. as comfortable as any I have ever owned and I could have run around in 2nd gear and still got better fuel mileage than my Tacoma. It was a nice truck, wouldnt mind having another.

I’ll let you know when/ if I hit 300,000 miles! So far so good, 90,000mi on my 2013 4.0. Replaced my AC clutch around 70,000mi, FF’ed my frame to stop/ prevent rust, and my idlers are making some noise, other than that not too many issues.

To answer your question the 4runner is more reliable, fully boxed frame opposed to the open c channel tacoma frame, made in Japan opposes to the US or Mexico build of tacomas. Ladder on frame so yes I consider it a truck in my book.

My 2010 2.7 5 speed has proven reliable so far but have had its issues. Faded roof and hood (had entire truck painted to a cost of $7,500 stock radio gets glitchy (read its a normal tacoma issue) steering rack has a slight seep and there's a groaning in the steering when it starts after sitting (me thinks maybe the filter screen in ps resivor is clogged) transmission, engine and transfer case have been bulletproof and dead reliable so far no noises misshifts etc. Frame is completely rust free

Reliability is measured in the aggregate. It’s an average.

As far as Nissan having problems it is because of their CTV trannies. The frontiers don't have this problem since they don't use CTV on them. The frontiers are actually quite reliable and very close to the quality of tacomas. Only thing I don't like about the frontiers is the large turn radius it has and how low to the ground it is compared to my Tacoma.

My problem with the Frontier was with the way Nissan was dealing with the CVT transmission failures and passing them off on the customer in general. Why would you want to buy any of their products knowing that? I liked the Frontier but passed.
