Just waiting on the 24 hour gasket maker to dry now. Going to be a struggle to not start it in the meantime. Video to come.

Glad you found the culprit, yea that cam sensor looks kinda chewed up and full of trash on the end.

Judging by the screwed up tensioner, I'm guessing that the previous owner installed a new chain after rebuilding the engine, stripped out the top bolt to it, the chain started rattling around, nicked the cam sensor and then he said screw it and sold it.

But she's back on the road! Oil dripped down everywhere so time to wash her for the first time in years. May even deep clean the interior while I'm on cloud9. Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

Just watched the video. Is the air filter just not on for testing purposes?

Just installed a Stage 3 URD clutch. If 3rd gear wasn't gone, a TRD supercharger would totally be on the list!

Hacked up air filter job was from the previous owner. Have my eye on a couple OEM airbox setups from local junkyards. Just wanted to get it running first. I think I remember something about intakes doing absolutely nothing on a 4.0 plus I'd rather have the peace of mind of OEM. And to get rid of the red cover because I think it looks tacky.

Just like all vehicles, it depends on the quality of the OEM, versus the improvements & quality an aftermarket can have over OEM if any. Plenty for the 1GR make improvements. As always, get what fits your requirements.

Totally right. I think I'm just ready to drive the heck out of this thing instead of potentially ruining something again.

Just to document this disaster of a truck and for another laugh, heres how the clutch came to me. Clutch was constantly engaged and would not come out of gear. Apparently someone extended the slave rod wayyy past OEM measurements. I'll still never be able to figure out why. So it eventually broke the clutch inner springs too. Poor truck has had a rough life...

Oh man! I can’t see the video for some reason but nice job sticking with it, and fixing it! I think you’re right that aftermarket intakes don’t do anything on a stock motor, but once you start modding it, then upgrading the air intake becomes worthwhile.

What brand clutch came out of it? That isn't OEM.

The old clutch was a Competition Clutch Stage 3+. Previous owner said he was putting clutches in constantly which makes sense with the slave cylinder condition. I'm guessing the TOB was making noise like they all do and someone came along and decided to preload the bearing the incorrect way. Who knows.

Thanks hx989. I was too stubborn to abandon the project. I'm glad I didn't because now I basically have a brand new truck or at least drivetrain/components. It has a nice exhaust on it so maybe once the OEM-ness wears off, I'll toss some headers on it along with a proper intake. I live near Mid Ohio so the plan all along was to take it there to have fun with since it has aftermarket suspension on it already. Time to see how the Tacomas hold up...at least I somewhat know how to fix it should anything break mid runs!

I guess the “rebuilt” engine wasn’t destined for greatness…made it through a tank of fuel and then boom. No codes other than O2 codes since apparently the PO punched out the catalytic converters. Yeesh.

Known running 4.0 from an 04 4Runner going in after swapping out the notorious early gen head gaskets and swapping oil pans since it appears upper and lower pans are different for XRunners. Hoping for 200k miles out of it instead of 200.

Also swap the intake cam gears from the XR's engine into the used 4Runner engine. They are different.

@Torspd what is your opinion on running the larger oil pan on the X-runner. (XRunner is smaller correct?)
Seems to me it can’t hurt, I thought at one time some guys swapped pans or added a spacer?

Either add the @Coupe oil pan spacer, or use the 4x4 oil pans. (Much more expensive option.) The 4x4 pans swap, requires a BFE to the cross-member behind the oil pan.

Yea for whatever reason the sensors on the 04 4.0 4runner are 2 wire Variable Reluctance type and the 05 and up and all 4.0 tacomas use 3 wire Hall Effect type cam sensors, make sure you use the engine harness original to the X-Runner on the replacement engine as well.

Awesome awesome info! Think I’ll reseal the 4Runner pan then and the crossmember should be easy to massage with the engine out. Waiting on a Toyota timing chain and some OEM head gaskets to arrive and then it should be good to go. I’m not rolling the dice on FelPro or any other aftermarket ones at this point.
