Has anyone heard of owners with 2019+ 040 trucks having this issue? I have a 2020 in Super White and other than debris under the paint on almost every panel (annoying) I haven't seen any peeling issues. I do however garage my truck so it doesn't sit outside much since it's a spare vehicle. Seems now that it's 2022 we should be starting to hear of issues with 2019+ trucks if there's indeed an issue that still hasn't been resolved.

Was this isolated to the Mexico plant or have trucks from both factories seen the issue?

I have a 2020 Super White as well. I’m watching this issue too. No issues here so far. AFAIK, just the 3rd gen 16,17 & 18, out of the Mexico plant were affected. Super White is a predominant colour and seems that a very small % have issues in the 2nd & 3rd gens overall. However, I wouldn’t be happy if this happened to my 2020.

I had a contractor come out to my house last week with a super white 3rd gen. He hadn't noticed the paint starting to peel from the passenger side rear window frame, similar to others here. I turned around and asked him 'So, is this a 2017?' and he said yes. I do hope the 2020 models aren't hit with this. I have debris (small bits) under the paint on pretty much every panel and Toyota has told me to suck it up basically.

Bro. Super white has been peeling for 10+ years out of multiple factories. You’re not immune.

Quite possibly you're right, unfortunately. However, my understanding is that Toyota sells more white Tacomas than other colors, by a lot. I wouldn't think the peeling happens to everyone or else it would be much more obvious from people on the forum.

Sorry you’re going through that. This whole problem seems odd to me. I see lots of super white Toyota vehicles every day and rarely see a major paint issue. My 2020 is super white and this concern does take away from the ownership experience.

I have a 2018 Tacoma and the paint started to peel a while back but it’s now in multiple spots around the back drivers side window. I took it to the dealership and they refuse to fix it. My question is how can they pick and choose based on a vehicle instead of the actual issue. We know the Super White paint has issues. I’m considering suing to have this fixed. Anyone else in the same boat?

I am considering another Tacoma in super white because of the availability over other colors and I like the color. I’m now worried.

What could it be about white versus any other color? If it’s adhesion, this would be an issue with all the colors. Then there’s frequency .. is this a 1/10, 1/100, 1/1000, or 1/10,000 problem? And then, why the F hasn’t toyota said “hey guys we fixed this on 2018 and newer” if they know it’s a mother Fing problem? What the F?

that is horrifying. Such a recent model. This tells me toyota did zero to fix this issue. I wonder if this is an issue everyone has but not everyone does anything about it or notices

It’s a known issue on any Toyota or Lexus product in white. I’ve seen it on everything from IQs to GXs. You don’t buy white Toyotas.

As others have mentioned this problem is ongoing as I first noticed on my 2006 and 07 Tacoma’s in super white. The best defense would be apply and maintain a good paint correction and ceramic coating when the vehicle is new. Limit the UV exposure, garage the vehicle if you can or buy a good cover.

How would paint correction or ceramic coating help? The problem lies between the topcoat and primer. You can put whatever you want on top. Not going to stop the top coat releasing from the primer. Sort of like painting interior trim of a house. You can’t put oil based paint on top of latex. The adhesion between the the coats is not there.

Also, it’s a brand new toyota. And a truck. It should be used … you know, outside, in the sun…. Seems ridiculous to have to use the vehicle any differently from any other color.

I would really be interested in the percentages. I believe Toyota sells more white Tacomas than other colors so perhaps that’s why we see (or perceive) there’s a bigger problem. I’ve read about several other Tacoma colors that had clear coat failure quickly and substantially, MGM trucks with mismatched panels, etc. so for those who say it’s a just a white truck issue I don’t buy it. I have a white 2020 and so far I’m ok but I do check older white trucks when I see them and do notice issues on some. Not sure why the passenger rear door is such a common trouble spot.

For all those who have had white paint peeling issues, can you tell us if your truck was made in San Antonio, Baja, or Guanajuato? It would be good to know if all these issues came out of one factory. For all we know, they are all from Texas and that helps prove it was a manufacturing problem and not a truck owner caused issue.

If my paint quits, I'll pressure wash off the loose stuff, and paint it desert camo.
