Cooling issues? Not anymore

How about a factory Lexus PWM electric fan? It is installed on various V8 and V6 cars(including 2GR and 8GR equipped vehicles).... ECU controlled. It would be crazy if the Taco ECU had the ability... I'll give it a 50/50 chance of existing. Where are the tuners? We need a flash for electric fans!

 

Because mechanical fluid coupling fan clutches fail far less than electric fan setups and are FAR simpler (less things to go wrong).

So if they are less efficient or effective at providing cooling, are the trade offs worth it?

To me, it would seem, if the primary function is to provide cooling, and it does not do that as well as an electric... Then upgrading it seems logical...

This depends on your design goals. if you simply want your AC to work better in slow traffic, and or want a little extra cooling available when engine is under heavy load; a supplemental fan will do. This will not free up horsepower, nor save gas, but this is what Toyota offers as a solution to the AC issue, in their TSB.

 

The primary function is to provide consistent reliable cooling at a cost effective price, hence why mechanical fan is chosen for vehicles that are going to have use cases out where services arent around loads are high and conditions not ideal (where trucks, heavy equipment etc are used).

This is not to state that an electric fan setup cant be consistent and reliable, but then price goes WAY out the window, and gains on a consumer level truck like ours are not worth it.


You can add a supplemental fan if your AC needs are greater at low speeds but you really shouldnt be having any engine cooling issues with the stock system.

 

Disagree. The gains are worth it. The vast majority of light duty cars and trucks run efans. They're plenty reliable and give proven gains in low speed cooling, power and mpgs. If we had an efan maybe Toyota could have been a little more aggressive with our trans tuning but still hit MPG goals.

Also, our trucks do struggle with cooling at low speed and low engine RPMs. One of the main disadvantages of a mechanical fan is just that, besides the extra wasted HP, they don't move a lot of air at low RPM.

 

If the truck was designed by toyota with an efan it would work well. But as seen in this thread and others like it, aftermarket setups are prone to failures of all kinds.

 

Early adopters of aftermarket kits are always kind of test dummies and the people that bought this kit knew that upfront. Once they get it figured it out they'll be good. That fan cools a 650 HP supercharged V8. Think it'll be fine once the bugs are worked out.

And that's the point of this thread. It allows them to share their experience with the kit and allow others to decide if this is the right path for them or not.

The TSB is out of date it seems, well for me anyway because of miles...

Just stumbled on this thread and read through it. Really interesting. I can’t stand clutch fans. Hopefully this kit will stay alive and get the bugs worked out. I’d love to get one!

 

Need someone with knowledge of the Tacoma ECU.

 

Mine was within the limits, so could have had it done; but I read teh whole 65 pages of instructions, and decided that I did not want someone other than me to be that intimate with my truck. Entire dash out, to connect wires at left and right, under the dash, plus the outdoor stuff. I simply decided to take this into my own hands.

Is it realativly easy to add a supplement fan?

 

With this kit on my 2nd gen this summer so far I've seen Temps hit 230, this was in the desert going up hills with the truck loaded down

Most of the time it's 180-195

If I hit the fan over ride the ac gets cold very quickly now that I've changed out the ac clutch. I'll leave the override button on when i leave the car so the remote start cools the interior down.

So far pleased with the kit but need more time wheeling out in the desert to really test it out

 

is that the Torque Converter or PAN temp you tracking? Assuming Pan but wanted to check. I need to get around to installing mine. I just put on a larger trans cooler with a small fan and similar it now keeps it super cool. Adding don't the DEO setup should pair nicely. Also good to see you have the override switch on. A lot of folks have not added it.

 

Obd scanner says engine temp. Haven't been tracking transmission temps
