Hey folks, I'm have the Valley Runner tune on my 04B41 ECU and just purchased the Valley Sport tune which requires 04B42. I tried updating the ECU via vftuner, but I keep getting an e13 error, so I decided to go the Techstream route. My question is this. Do I need to flash the truck back to stock 04B41 before I flash the TSB that upgrades it to 04B42? And could the fact that it was flashed have prevented the vftuner ECU upgrade? Thanks!

Nah it’s the software definitely or something I’ve missed along the way. The old techstream would only work for 2016-2020 Tacomas. I decided to install a newer version that worked for 2021 and it would work. After a certain amount of time passed no 2021 would work. Decided to remove recently and install a new version again and then nothing would update and I couldn’t remove and the new and install the old and get it to work again.

So tried system restore then laptop crashed and is no longer working so bought new laptop and at least got the old version working but still can’t get newer version to work.

The VFTuner upgrader isn't working yet.

You can use Techstream to update.

You do not need to flash back to stock unless your current tune that you already have flashed to the truck is an EROM file. To determine this, you can hit Prepare ECM and see if your ecu Calibration reads out beginning with 89663- or V9663-. If it is the former, just update via TS and then flash the new tune. If it is the later, you will need to first flash to a non EROM tune, such as stock.

    Awesome. Thanks!

It's 89663, so not an EROM tune. TS should do the trick. Does flashing a TSB return the ECU to stock at that version, or is it an incremental patch?

You will be stock and it will be necessary to flash the aftermarket tune with a matching ID after the update is performed.

If it's a new laptop the drivers might be wonky. Try to reinstall the Tactrix driver? Also see if Windows Device Manager shows any "?" or "!" icons in the USB areas. Also, is it Windows 10 or 11? Because Win 11 is kinda cr@ppy since it's so new and possibly nobody knows how Tactrix/Techstream are seen by that version, so you might want to roll back to Win 10 if that's the case. Finally try another OBD software to see if your hardware can "see" the OBD port to isolate whether it is Teachstream or not, such as Torque Pro or OBDwiz/Scantool.net -- good luck!

Windows 11. I’ve managed to get the version 14 back up and running but can’t get 16+ to work unfortunately. Will try again later.

Curious to know if the drivers are the same for all the versions or if there are different driver installs for 16 compared to version 14.

Zero difference in the drivers. It's the same J2534 protocol.

vF has their own drivers, but I believe that is more for Logging and Recovery? A while back, vF said that flashing cannot use anything but the Toyota's method.

Curious if the drivers are the issue now. Especially if I were to upgrade would the drivers need reinstalled?

Since version 14 is installed would it be advised to remove and install new or just install the newest version and then install v16?

I have only installed drivers when starting with a new computer or if vF said that there was an update. So, that has only been needed a few times while updating TS and / or vF too many times to count.

You cannot have two versions of TS on one computer. TS will force an update to the existing installation, which has worked fine for me in the past.

Yeah I was just thinking of various possible errors on my end. Who knows it may be just because I’ve skipped a step. However when I very first ever tried to go from v14 to v16 is when I received all the crazy errors. Will remove and install new tomorrow as well as reinstall drivers after the upgrade in that order and see what happens.

It doesn't hurt to reinstall drivers, but use the ones from the vF software. Of course, be sure that you have selected the OpenPort drivers from the TS VIM Setup menu. The Mongoose drivers are for the Toyota adapters.

Thank you again Shellshock. With some inspiration from you and some YouTube videos. I was able to use the boot camp from my mac to download windows 10 into my mac order to update and apply my TPMS readers to my truck.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::D

    @reymataco - this.

    - First you need to flash back to a non erom tune (all numeric non alpha 04B81) via VFTuner - then update the ECU ID via the Toyota (TSB/CUW) using Tech Stream to non-erom 04B82. Then flash the new EROM Magnuson/YotaWerx Tune (matching the ECU ID).

Looking for the non-erom tune for you - maybe someone here with '18 AT here can share. @mZiggy, @tonered, @ktbell444 ??

    He followed these instructions actually.

His situation seems rather odd. He flashed back to 04B81 stock (his former ECU ID) since he was on the B81 Maggy tune, then applied the TSB ECU update to 04B82.

He reported successful completion/update, and a successful test start on the resulting 04B82 stock CAL. He then proceeded to flash the 04B82 Stryker tune from YW. It completed and prompted him to turn the truck off and then start it (normal), and when he did so, the truck would not do so and moving forward, VFTuner began giving the same prompts observed with ECU bricking or lack of communication to ECM (which come up for various reasons, not always bricking related).

Subsequent Gen2 Force Flash was unsuccessful.

I've personally never observed a failure to start after VFTuner completes the flash.

Exactly as he noted to me on the phone. Oddity and disturbing. Maybe low voltage issue during flash. I can't bench it for him and want to ensure once ecu comes back to life he gets it taken care of. Sounds like his only option is local bench flash if so. @MGMSangTaco . Was looking at files in my VFT folder and "stock" is not obviously defined as "non-erom" although it has the .vft extension. Something that could be clarified further. Not the first and certainly won't be the last. thanks for taking time to assist him.
