I’m thinking a lot of 3rd Gen Tacoma owners wouldn’t mind the 2nd Gen 4.0

Idk what kind of wheelin you do but around here we crawl rocks, one at a time single file on a narrow trail. It can take each rig a few minutes to clear an obstacle so what are the trucks behind supposed to do? Shut their motors off and get out and wait? Seems a bit far fetched to expect that or to call leaving the motor running while you wait your turn abuse..

 

Ah, so the engine is bad for off-roading, it had nothing to do with wether or not its in a truck.

There really isn't a difference, the 3.5 has a little better gas mileage but thats about it. The dual vvt-i 4.0 however would be a definite upgrade.

 

Looks like pentastar has the same issues.

If I was bouncing it off the limiter “letting her eat” sure that’d be on me. But the truck was idling for ~5min while I waited my turn, it put the rod through the block the moment I gave it the slightest bit of throttle to start moving again.
So i guess according to you 4-5 minutes to long to let an engine sit idling? The angle was steep but nowhere near the mechanical limits of what these can do and all 4 tires were firmly on the ground. Had I been hanging the left front wheel in the air or if the truck was just about to roll over in those cases again I’d take the fall but the truck was just sitting there. It shouldn’t have this issue just sitting there idling, I’ve seen boat ramps and mountain passes that steep, guess Tacomas arnt intended to do those activities either.

 

Still dont understand how it happened even though you had an empty catch can. Did it fill up in those 4-5 minutes while you were idling?

 

You said that this is a bad "Truck engine",99.999999999% of trucks spend 0 seconds offroad. If you would like to argue that this is a bad offroad engine then thats a discussion we can have, but a bad "truck engine" this is not.

 

Nope all regular maintenance was done, and I don’t rag I out, and it went to shot going 65 down the highway but we’ll see.

What? That's how warranties work, a lawyer won't and can't do shit other than take more of your money than it would cost to fix on your own. Toyota warranties the engine for a period of time, if it breaks after that they are in the clear and are in no way obligated to do anything.

I guess, but 62k miles is nothing especially for a Toyota engine. That would be really fucked up if they won’t cover it.

You pay 40k for a “reliable” truck then at 62k miles the engine blows. If this happened to me, pretty sure I would lose my faith in Toyota.

 

Probably correct that 90%+ of Gen3 Tacomas never go off-road. Probably close to 90% of the ones that never see off-road ever truly “need” to engage 4WD.

 

yep that’s exactly how I’m feeling right now. I love my truck but this could spell the end for me with Toyota if they won’t work with me.

 

Agreed it shouldn’t have happened and sucks but going full Karen on the dealership is not the answer. Ask if they will cover, discuss with corporate, try to make a deal, etc, but demanding demanding Toyota do something they explicitly state is not covered is just dumb.
