I would like to thank you for both the Tilton discovery and the trans swap discovery threads. It is an amazing feeling clutch pedal with the Tilton, reminds me of how my 88 4runner clutch pedal felt. It was all fun to swap everything over and get rid of some junk.

 

BillDaCat8, after the break-in on your Spec clutch did you develop any additional noise when taking off in first gear or reverse? If so when did you start to notice it and did it go away?

At the time installed the Spec Clutch stage 1 I did install a new Luk flywheel that had the proper cut on it ect. Break-in was fine by then around 2500 mile i got a noise coming from the clutch on first gear and reverse gear take-offs.

I found a guy who posted a video on You-Tube with the same nose and problem my Spec clutch has developed. He says Spec is calling it Kevlar Squak but he also has a clutch made with different material then mine.

I’m popping in here to explain a bit.

Short story is that I’ve been having some physical stuff going on. Had surgery on my abdomen and then caught covid a few weeks after that. So, haven’t been on TW for a bit. There was also a change in employment status in there as well. Suffice it to say that I’ve had other stuff on my plate. Apologies to those that are in a hurry.

 

Although I believe that my 3+ clutch is a different material than what you’re running, my squeal is similar to the video. Albeit a lower pitch. Happens when slipping the clutch exclusively. Even during under 1k rpm starts. It does not do it every time. Which seems strange. I’m well over 5k miles with it at this point.

Guy in the video ended up having a bad pressure plate. Looks like the rivets weren’t installed properly. Kind of has me a bit worried now.

I'm very jealous of whatever sort of part sourcing interface that is. I have a hell of a time finding most things these days. Looks like I could pick that one up to confirm fitment on the 3rd Gen afterwards.

 

Progress Update #4

Sorry for the wait everyone. Life has had a lot of other plans for me this year. I also took some much needed vacation time this month to unwind a bit. I'm back at it now thought and am nearing the end.

Recently, I have: done some more quill spacer R&D (and purchased a manual lathe so that I can make them at home), ordered a 3rd Gen quill from Toyota (thanks to Bill's extensive part knowledge) to confirm RC62F fitment, made my slight design revisions after spending time with the RA60F bellhousing in front of me and produced a first batch of adaptor bushings (since I outsource these I don't want to have to keep people waiting on amigo's lead-times).

Proof that I'm actually still working on this...

 

Progress Update #5

RC62C quill arrived today. One minor tweak to the prototype RA60 quill spacer and it adapts the Tilton threaded sleeve to the RC62C all the same, utilizing both the machined flat and radius at the base of the quill for maximum support. Also got my material in to start making these out of metal. Just need to button up some things on my little lathe first and it's all green lights from there!

 

I'm light years away from this swap but take my money!!

 

@Kasbien I'm in Southwest Alberta and looking to replace my clutch and install the Tilton, do you have the sleeves and part list available for the RA60F? I am ready to buy now, let me know! Thanks for all the work you guys have done on this, impressive engineering!!

 

Yeah everything is basically ready. Just having the worst time getting some replacement parts for my lathe right now in order to finish off one part of the kit. Wrong part after shipping delays after bad customer service. The works...

Anyways stay tuned to this thread for when I get that last piece sorted.

 

On another note: Who has medium-strength threadlocker (blue) and bearing retaining compound (green) readily available in their garage?

I'm trying to decide whether I should order a box of each in the 0.5mL disposable packets to supply in the kit (which has proven a pain in the ass to source in Canada). If the majority of people have those common items in their garage then maybe it isn't worth the trouble? Whatcha think?

I went to Summit racings site to try and source the correct Tilton, I didn’t see the part number @BillDaCat8 referemced on the first post. What part number from summit did you use @Kasbien? Thanks in advance!!

 

I'd say leave it out, it's easy enough to source (at least here in the lower 48 it is).

More replacement belts for the lathe on the way. Everyone cross you're fingers that they're the right ones this time... I hate the back and forth crap!

I definitely agree here on the short pedal travel. Would be mo betta to have more stroke. Mine is pretty razor-edge in the engagement zone.
I too have been thinking of a master re-size or trying to re-drill the hole in the FJ pedal for the clevis closer to the fulcrum of the pedal to try to lessen the stroke a bit. I worry that the latter method would cause some wear issues though. I may just try it just for shiggles tho. Easy enough to reverse. A cylinder re-size to a smaller bore would definitely do the trick though. I would consider that to be the “optimum” fix.

I did research the re-size route a bit shortly after I got all of this working in my truck. I was wary of posting about it for fear of scaring anyone off. I also thought that maybe it was just the nature of the clutch I had selected. I think that a cylinder change should be considered a sort of “stage 2” type of thing. Not as a necessity. Nothing too scary really. Pull pedal assembly complete. Bracket and all. Modify pedal bracket to suit new cylinder and then re-install and bleed. Tilton has a couple of cylinders that look very promising. This is the next step for me.
