I think we are at a philosophical difference then. Because I’m going to say what I dun said before.

-Tighter headspace value, not just within “the saami range”

-I’m aware we aren’t talking about 3 rings of steel or lugs of a manual action. However, I AM talking about less slop. Smoother cycle. Tighter tolerances (within a specification).

You said it yourself, quality barrel…I’m just saying, a matched bolt, that is quality controlled at a minimum, if not, hand fitted to it.

This guy had a build guide on snipershide, but it was on the old hide and didn’t move over I guess..
..some of the follow ups where gold, Tubb had comments too that seem to be lost. But even in this saved thread, you can see that I’m not the only one that thinks this way. Certainly this is beyond the scope of this forum, but the space gun stuff is a thing.

Headspace needs to be correct weather you pay for a "matched bolt" or not.

"Tighter headspace value, not just within “the saami range”

Please describe what the above statement means.

I used to inhabit snipers hide and I think I am still on the reloading forum and wrote Reloading 101 and Reloading 201 but it's been a minute. I went away from that when they changed over and Frank sold it. Head space is important but the AR platform is simply what it is. I worked with AMU and Crane when AR's came to the National Match scene in long about 94' even spent a long weekend at GAP w/ George and another with J. Joplin at APA. My first AR10 came from Marty Bordsen who owns Badger Ordnance. The tube and the fitting between it and the upper is most important. You can pay to have someone "fit" a bolt but I would be more interested to see what it is they did to "fit the bolt", you can do it but why? You are much better off making the reloaded cartridge better fit the chamber. FWIW G. David Tubb is an arrogant piker/liar and cheat that should have his guns taken for anger issues.

    Cheers,

    Doc

Slightly off subject here, but wasn’t it Tubb who created the different reloading bullets with sandpaper grit in them to polish the barrel? I know he did some pretty interesting stuff with the AR, I’m actually using his flatwire buffer spring in my AR10.

FWIW, I also miss the old snipers hide. That was such a great place to pick up things and learn when I was just learning the ropes as a baby sniper in the late 2000’s.

I still haven’t decided if it’s worth reloading for my AR10. It shoots amazingly well with high quality ammo (147gr hornady precision hunters) that I don’t think it’s necessary to chase accuracy on it. I may have to pick your brain when my 30 Nosler gets here though

    It’s not amateur hour here.
Obviously it needs to be correct.

Tighter means tighter, man. Numbers closer together. Tolerance range tighter than saami range…so maybe 1.632 min, 1.636 max for QC. .004 brass growth on first firing doesn’t seem unreasonable. This is tighter than the saami min-max of .010. It almost seems…normal…except its common enough you will see .7-.9 growth and just that much more slop. If you want to nerd about this kind of stuff, and if you subscribe to these theories.

Like I said, it’s beyond the scope of this forum, I doubt the peanut gallery is outshooting their rifles, let alone with a gas gun.

Even if you could, it was brought to my attention many moons ago (funny enough, by Tubb) that the locktime using a AR will put you on the target something to the tune of 4x longer than a bolt gun. It’s one of a few reasons why gas guns never have caught on with serious PRS crowd.

    AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH! :angrygirl:

I have never built an AR before....worked on them, but never built from scratch. First was the buffer tube and now......
I got the barrel on the upper receiver yesterday (whoop) and it turns out I got the wrong size gas block! :frusty: Correct gas block ordered yesterday so I hope that gets here so I van put this project to sleep. Fingers crossed.

when I built mine, I made the carbine buffer mistake too. I switched over to a rifle length tube since the Tubbs flat wire spring is designed for it. I made the mistake of not using an adjustable gas block at first, but have switched to an adjustable block. It made it way easier to get the gun cycling well. I greatly underestimated how well the Area419 brake off gasses.

So Criterion service so far light years ahead of aero

I emailed them yesterday regarding UPS losing the shipment. Had a response this morning. So sorry this happened unfortunately we've seen this happen with UPS we'll get a new barrel shipped out today. An hour later I get new tracking number. No well just give it a few more days(already 7 days past delivery date) just took care of it.

Hopefully this one makes it next week and I get it up and running.

So, I am waiting for my gas block roll pin and decided to fit my Grey Ghost Precision 18 inch handguard (my barrel is 20 inches, but I am not bragging). Sadly, the alignment pins on the handguard did not match up exactly to my Aero Precision upper!

    Handguard.jpg

As much as I had to take tools to brand new parts, I grabbed file and went to work. It only took a few passes with the file on each side, but if fits like a glove now.

Looking at optics pretty soon and leaning to the Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24 x 50 as I hear that it is the best bang (no pun intended) for the buck optic out there. Any thoughts?

Arken seems to be the new hotness regarding value for money for optics. Plenty of YouTube reviews out there if you want to look. I have a buddy running one on an AI and he's got S&B glass on other rifles ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ His reason already had the Arken and differences other than name did not justify spending 11x more for Gucci glass

I just ordered a 4-16 for a precision .223 build $315 for optic and throw lever. Worth a gamble as this will just be a range pony.

    To be clear..

You’re buddy doesn’t need a S&B and the Arken is good enough for him, or are you (he) saying the arken is “just as good” as a S&B?

No he's saying he didn't see the need to buy another piece of high end glass when he had an option in hand that was satisfactory for the roll it serves.

His dilemma basically does a high end gun need to have high end glass just because?, or if a less expensive option fills the role is that suitable? The S&B glass is obviously better but the question becomes is it thousands of dollars better? I can't answer that as not my setup.

But it does say something when a guy who has multiple high end optics Razor HD S&B and others throws a glowing review behind a budget option.....

Look at Arken SH-4 GEN 2. 4-16X50 with a monster main tube which nets you more up and down. MOA or MIL reticle less than $500 for an FFP and I am impressed with the glass and knobs. OBTW I used to work for U.S. Optics so I know how they are supposed to work.

    Cheers,

    That gives more context.
Before, it sounded (to me) like another “just as good as” bs for poors trying to justify China optics.

I too, don’t set up every rifle with $2,500+ glass just because. Tier 1 optics are for tier 1 task, in my mind. Whether it’s SWFA, arken, Athlon or lower vortex line, etc, most of the budget scopes with good reputations are good enough indeed for most people in most task…these days.

SO.....living in Empire of CA I walked in to a local shop to make sure my AR10 will be compliant in this state, I saw a unicorn on the wall, and chambered in my favorite round of .45 ACP, I saw this, and had to have it.....with my wifes approval, at the cost of a new set of pots and pans for her....this will be coming home on my birthday. I need it like I need a hole in my head, but I am pretty excited.

Upper is back from the smith and I'm sorry to disappoint the Aero fans with this news.

The factory aero bolt/barrel/chamber extension FAILED headspace testing by the smith despite Aero telling me everything was fine.

I had been a big fan of Aero even to the point of willing to accept some QC issues given price point. However what is 100% not acceptable to me is their response and handing of a legitimate issue when presented with it.

I'd still recommend their lowers but that's about it.
