I wrestled with this. My wife needed a strong 4x4 for work & was always taking the Tacoma. So I bought a badass 4Runner. Problem solved for us!

I would get a v8 F150. I didn’t have kids when I got my Tacoma and now it’s a pain in the ass to fit the car seats. Fortunately my wife has a three row SUV.

I just bought an ARE shell because I had the same issues you had on long trips recently…truck packed to the brim.

I’d buy a Tundra if I was going to buy a full size. Already owned a Ram 1500 and it was an extremely expensive piece of junk (and that was purchased brand new).

I wouldn’t get a new tundra. Probably a year or two old one so I didn’t have to deal with new-model growing pains.

If you are aiming for space, you don't get another pick up truck. Get one of those big SUVs. Comfort and space at the same time. Sequoia.

Yeah didn’t want to spend that much either. Tremor is cool, but I am more of an XL guy. There was a time you could get 4WD XL 5.0 Super Cab 6’ bed for around $30K those days are gone, wasn’t going to pay $40K+ for a base model.

I can fit 2 rear facing seats in my 2016 double cab no problem. Tundra if I were to switch to a full sized pickup.

Sierra 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax. It gets 35mpg unloaded and pulls my travel trailer like nothing. My dad has one to haul his car trailer and motorcycles and I borrow it occasionally when he isn’t using it.

Cool trip. I was just in Mammoth yesterday for some climbing.

We do a lot of road trips with two kids and two adults. Careful packing can make the difference, and we bring a lot: bins of climbing gear, camp chairs, propane tank and accompanying fire pit, bikes on our hitch bike rack, coolers, tents, sleeping bags, water jugs, etc. I’d say stick with what you have if you can. Nice truck.

I'd get the Silverado Trail Boss with the 5.3L, Crew Cab Standard Bed. LT Trail Boss Premium package, in Glacier Blue Metallic. Add an extended warranty for the possible lifter failure.

Ford Raptor or RAM TRX. I need something that would tow a wake boat, but not look like an old fart truck.

Sweet I couldve spent a week in Mammoth alone! The national park crowds are rough to deal with. Yes the wifes full size suit case wasnt helping. Also considering selling the roam box and getting a roof bag like the ironman 4x4.

I sit too far back in my Tacoma for a rear facing seat behind me. It’s not even close.

Well, I kinda did. Loved the Corvette to get my "spirited" driving fix and had my FJ Cruiser for getting to my favorite off road destinations. But the Corvette really didn't see that much use other than me having fun in it on the weekends as the wife has bad hips and just couldn't get in and out of the car very well.

So it was time to let the Vette go and grab a Taco. And my timing was perfect as I got my truck right before the pandemic bullshit ramped up. I'll probably get me a C8 Vette once the prices come down from the stratosphere.

Don’t know how you guys with kids do it, camp solo it is barely enough for me…and don’t need much. Just had to sleep on the trail because got my bike stuck, all I had was the clothes I was wearing and an emergency blanket. Of course the truck back at base camp was loaded to the brim… :D

Interesting thoughts here. I took my dad and both kids to mammoth with my DCSB 2016 and I was super tight on space. That was before the shell though, just a tonneau. It wouldn’t work for the wife and dog with the kids and they are growing.

Our 2018 Odyssey is vastly superior for family road trips. I have two sets of chains for it. We’ve never needed to lace up, but we aren’t adventurous.

I struggle with this too. Currently outfitting my ‘02 Tundra 4x4 for this end. It’s a RC so only me and the boys but dog and gear will fit fine in the bed. I struggled mightily on the locker decision but decided LSD for reliability and robustness on the old rig. Figure once the boys start driving I’ll have two rigs and we can have lockers in the Taco and use the Tundra for recovery. Hard to predict stuff that far down the road.

I owned a full size back before they were monsters. I drive my bro in law’s 5500 when hauling horses. Work trucks are great for heavy work but not my style for daily driving.

Currently loving my ‘05 RC 2wd for a daily. That one really scratched my itch. The DC 3rd gen isn’t small and with a shell it’s not super great on visibility either. Neither is the Tundra.

Pretty difficult to have one vehicle which does these types of adventure trips well and is a pleasant daily.
