Need help on front end

I venture your Tie Rod adjustment is so far off it is compounding problems.

This is so very hard when you don`t really know what your looking at to figure out.

A year ago you might not remember if your steering wheel and the rack where centered when you connected them this could also be causing problems.

little things that added up make a major problem.

Just using a 95, 6cyl, AT 4WD - this is what I come up with when searching:

Now of course I would call and confirm by giving them a VIN number to be sure that is the correct part before ordering.

Its easy to muck up the thread count when installing outer ties which then of course messes up your alignment. Not saying that is what happened in your situation but it happens.

Do you know of anyone that has another tacoma of similar year that you can compare and measure thread distances? thats probably where i would start..

When you pull the cluster make sure you disconnect the battery. That flimsy circuitry back there shorted out on mine and I had to replace the whole thing.

If you spend a little time there are a few toyota dealerships around that sell largely discounted OEM parts for these trucks online (Mcgeorge toyota comes to mind). If i can find OEM for close to knockoff price i pay a little more for OEM.

Ok since the tie rod ends have been switched multiple times I'm not sure which is the corrective anymore. This is on the passenger side. It is labeled RH the L is on the driver side. Are we once again backwards? Front of the truck is to the right of the tie rod end.

 

You are orientated the correct way now. L is driver. R is passenger.

You need to be careful on the number of turns lock to lock. You have too many going one direction and not enough going the other direction. They should be equal.

You are in danger of breaking your ribbon cable in the steering column. You will end up with an air bag light or non functioning cruise or horn if you don't correct this.

 

Like how many turns they go on?

 

Going by memory here.

I think it's 2.5 revolutions each way.

You will need to disconnect the steering u joint, center the wheel, then reattach the steering joint.

Of course make sure wheels are straight before you do this.

 

Honestly, the alignment tech should have corrected this issue. I remember when I first did my inner and outer tie rods. I seriously botched it and screwed up the steering wheel position. More threads showing on one side vs another, etc. First shop I went to (Toyota - go figure), kicked it back and suggested I replace the UCAs. Second shop (alignment only shop), resolved the issue and put me very close to within spec. Still ended up replacing UCAs because of an OME suspension lift but that is another chapter...

@koditten is spot on with the steering wheel. You have to be very careful or you'll end up with another repair.

I can’t picture how this would even be possible, no matter how badly adjusted the outer TREs are. Can you post some more pictures that clearly illustrate this interference?

 

The CV axels will be here Friday and then the alignment will be done. As of right now this is how it looks when turned to the driver side.

 

What size tires? Are those factory wheels? If not, what are the specs (diameter, width, backspace)?

 

Your picture in post 26 shows the tie rod attaches to the lbj within the radius of the rotor/backing plate (as it should), so I don’t see how it’s possible for the wheel to fit over the rotor/backing plate, *and* have the tie rod make contact with the tire, unless the steering stop is missing from the passenger side? Idk, this baffles me.

 

265/70/16 is the size. Unsure what the backspace is.

 

It all baffles me.
